Top seven youngest players in FIFA World Cup history ft. Eto’o & Mora

The Mexico national football team locked horns with the South Africa national football team in the opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The most deserving stars from both countries stepped foot to compete on the grandest stage of them all.

Every player from around the world dreams about playing for their nation at the mega competition, but only a handful of them get a chance to do so. When it comes to the younger stars, they are the most pumped up indviduals to show their talent on the biggest stage of football.

There have been many young players who have featured in the FIFA World Cup and engraved their names in the history books. Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland remains the youngest teenage prodigy at 17 years and 41 days to compete in the flagship tournament.

The most recent young player to make his World Cup debut is Mexico’s Gilberto Mora. He made his World Cup debut against South Africa in the 2026 edition of the competition.

7. Bartholomew Ogbeche

Bartholomew Ogbeche made his World Cup debut at 17 years 244 days. It was the 2002 edition of the tournament where the young Nigerian star made his debut. With his participation with the Super Eagles, it was definite that Nigeria are ready to give more and more opportunities to the young talent in the modern era.

6. Gilberto Mora

He is one of the fan favourites in the Mexico national football team due to his performances for both his club and country. Gilberto Mora is the newest addition to the list of the youngest players to appear at the FIFA World Cup. He made his debut during the Mexico vs South Africa game of the 2026 edition of the mega competition.

At 17 years and 240 days, Mora is also the youngest Mexican player on the grandest stage of them all.

5. Pele

One of the most renowned players when it comes to the world of football. Pele made his FIFA World Cup debut against the Soviet Union in 1958 at the age of 17 years and 235 days. The Brazilian legend is the youngest goal scorer in the history of the competition.

He is also the youngest to win and score in the final of the FIFA World Cup.

4. Salomon Olembé

Salomon Olembé made his debut on the biggest stage of football back in 1998. The Cameroon star stepped onto the field against Austria. He became one of the youngest players to do so.

He did not start, but later came in as a substitute for this side. The player made an immediate impact at 17 years and 185 days of age.

3. Femi Opabunmi

Femi Opabunmi is the youngest Nigerian player to score in the FIFA World Cup. He made his debut against England at 17 years 101 days. Opabunmi later found the net and etched his name in the history books.

He did make the headlines during that edition, but was never able to find his full potential due to his injuries.

2. Samuel Eto’o

Samuel Eto’o is another renowned name on the list. He is the second youngest player to play at FIFA’s flagship tournament. Eto’o made his debut at the 1998 edition of the World Cup for the Cameroon national football team.

Later on, he went on to become one of the most exceptional talents from his nation. His age during his debut on the world stage was recorded as 17 years 99 days.

1. Norman Whiteside

The Northern Ireland player remains the youngest to ever compete in the FIFA World Cup. He was just 17 years and 41 days old when he made his debut against Yugoslavia at the 1982 edition of the mega competition. He surpassed Pele’s record and became the youngest player ever to play in the flagship tournament.
