Iran vs New Zealand: Top five youngsters to watch during FIFA World Cup 2026 match

New Zealand could field a U-23 defensive duo against Iran in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener

FIFA World Cup 2026’s lowest-ranked nation, New Zealand, will play against Asian giants Iran in their first Group G encounter. While Iran is relying on experienced players, New Zealand has a better mix of youngsters and more experienced stars.

5. Aria Yousefi (Iran)

Aria plays for Sepahan in the Iranian league and is primarily a right back. The 24-year-old has made 10 appearances for his national team, scoring 1 goal.

The defender is pacey and usually goes forward to help his attackers. Saleh Hardani is another right-back option for Iran, and hence it has to be seen if Aria starts in Iran’s first game of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

4. Jesse Randall (New Zealand)

Jesse Randall plays for Auckland FC in the A-League and has enjoyed a decent 2025-26 season, scoring 9 goals and assisting 8. The 23-year-old is chiefly a left winger but can also play on the right or as a centre forward.

The player has made 11 appearances for his national team, scoring 2 goals.

3. Tyler Bindon (New Zealand)

The 21-year-old made his debut with the New Zealand national team in 2023 and has since made 25 appearances for his nation. Tyler currently plays for Sheffield United and previously played for Wigan.

Aside from Sheffield United, Bindon has played for Reading; he was also part of Los Angeles FC’s youth team at the start of his career. The central defender will have his task cut out against Iran, who will likely be the attacking team.

2. Finn Surman (New Zealand)

Finn Surman will likely partner with Tyler Bindon in defence. The 22-year-old currently plays for the Portland Timbers in the MLS, and his experience will therefore be even more vital for the New Zealand football team.

The centre-back has made 19 appearances for the New Zealand national team. With respect to his club career, Finn has played exclusively in the USA with Wellington Phoenix and Portland Timbers.

1. Amir Mohammad Razzaghinia (Iran)

The 20-year-old plays for Iranian club Esteghlal and primarily plays as a defensive midfielder. Amir has made three appearances for Iran’s senior team and has represented his nation in various youth levels as well.

While it is unlikely that the youngster will start the game against New Zealand, we can expect Amir to come on as a substitute in the second half to inject freshness into Iran’s game.

When and where will the Iran vs New Zealand fixture take place at the FIFA World Cup?

Iran will face New Zealand at the Los Angeles Stadium on June 15.

Who are the top young players from both sides?
