Lewis Hamilton's production company, Dawn Apollo Films, will be producing the film in collaboration with Apple Studios.
It’s no secret that Formula 1 has inspired several movies showcasing the sport’s true nature and rivalries. However, none of them come close to capturing the real thrill of being in an F1 car as much as Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton’s next film, called “Apex.”
The film, a collaboration between Apple Studios and Lewis Hamilton’s production company, Dawn Apollo Films, commenced filming this week at the iconic Silverstone circuit. As part of the production, the filmmakers introduced an 11th team on the track and even raced a few laps in a modified F2 car that closely resembles an F1 car.
However, it’s important to note that Brad Pitt and Damson Idris will not be driving an actual car during filming. Instead, qualified stunt drivers will take the wheel of the modified F2 car during designated time slots for “filming activity (high speed)” to capture the cars in action on the track. And due to the tight schedule of a Grand Prix weekend, each time slot is limited to a maximum of 20 minutes.
To further ensure an authentic portrayal of the sport, the team has been granted a dedicated garage and pit wall located between the Mercedes and Ferrari teams. This strategic positioning allows for realistic pit lane shots and provides viewers with a genuine sense of immersion in the world of F1.
The Plot
Although much of the plot is unknown since the movie is in active development, the story revolves around two racers at different stages of their careers, with Brad Pitt portraying Sonny Hayes, a retired veteran racer who is tempted back to the track for one last season and Damson Idris playing Joshua Pierce, a young and talented novice.
In the movie, both drivers will compete for APXGP, a fictional team aiming to make their mark on the sport. Furthermore, the on-track filming will allow the movie to seamlessly integrate with real-life F1 events, potentially featuring cameo appearances from drivers, team principals, and other key figures from the paddock.
Lewis Hamilton’s involvement in the film’s production as an advisor and consultant indicates that director Joe Kosinski, known for “Top Gun: Maverick,” aims to capture the authentic essence of Formula 1.
Finally, the APXGP team featured in “Apex” is set to appear at all remaining races of the 2023 F1 season, starting with Silverstone. However, on-track filming has only been confirmed for Silverstone, as it is one of the few tracks capable of accommodating an 11th team.
Release date
While a specific release date for “Apex” has not been announced, the film is expected to be featured on Apple TV due to the partnership with Apple Studios. And given the complexities involved in filming such a project, the movie is anticipated to be released by the end of 2024, with a trailer possibly being unveiled in late 2023.
