Lewis Hamilton is chasing a record of matching Ayrton Senna's feat in Belgian GP.
It’s no secret that the Belgian GP is one of the most thrilling races of the Formula 1 calendar, thanks in part to the track’s challenging conditions and harsh weather. And despite being a staple of the F1 calendar since 1950, only a handful of drivers have managed to secure multiple wins at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps. Let’s take a closer look at the top five drivers with most victories in the Belgian GP.
5. Kimi Raikkonen - 4 Wins
Known for his calm demeanour and often hailed as the “King of Spa,” Kimi Raikkonen’s prowess at the Belgian GP is extraordinary. Raikkonen’s first win at Spa was in 2004, driving for McLaren, and he later secured victories in 2005, 2007, and 2009, representing Ferrari.
4. Jim Clark - 4 Wins
For long-time fans of the sport, Jim Clark is no stranger, as he is often hailed as one of the sport’s all-time greats. The British driver, renowned not only in the world of Formula 1, conquered the Belgian GP five times. His triumph at Spa came in 1962, driving a Lotus 25, and he repeated this feat in 1963, 1964, and 1965.
3. Lewis Hamilton - 4 Wins
Lewis Hamilton’s dominance in the turbo hybrid era is remarkable, having won 7 world driver’s championships. However, his record at the Belgian GP is equally spectacular, with Hamilton’s first win at this circuit in 2010 while driving for McLaren, and later, with Mercedes, he secured three more wins in 2015, 2017, and 2020.
Although his recent form has depreciated since Mercedes hasn’t been able to keep up with Red Bull, the 2023 Belgian GP could be a turning point as Mercedes has brought some major updates to the side pods.
2. Ayrton Senna - 5 Wins
Possibly one of the finest drivers to have ever graced the circuit, Ayrton Senna secured his first win at the Belgian GP in 1985 when starting from pole position, he led every lap of the race and finished a staggering 28 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Nigel Mansell. He then continued his success with four more wins in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991, representing McLaren.
1. Michael Schumacher - 6 Wins
Topping the list is none other than the legendary Michael Schumacher, who holds the record for the most race wins at Spa with six victories. His first win came in 1992 when he won by a staggering 36 seconds. He later added five more wins in 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2002, representing both Benetton and Ferrari.
