Lewis Hamilton has won the F1 British Grand Prix a record eight times.
Ever since its inception in 1950, the British Grand Prix has become a fan favourite, thanks in part due to its high-speed corners and challenging weather conditions. As a result, the iconic Silverstone circuit has witnessed some exciting moments that have left fans on the edge of their seats. Now, let’s take a look at the top five most remarkable moments from the British GP.
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton Collide (2021)
The 2021 Formula 1 season was one of the most exhilarating title battles fans had seen in years, with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton being neck and neck in terms of points. However, the British Grand Prix that year became a defining moment in the season-long rivalry between the two drivers.
This is because Hamilton, departing from his cautious approach in previous races, made it clear that he would not settle for anything less than an all-out fight against Verstappen.
As the race began with the two championship contenders occupying the front row, Hamilton executed a daring manoeuvre on the inside at corpse corner, resulting in a collision that sent Verstappen hurtling into the wall with a tremendous impact of 51G. This incident not only showcased the dangers of the sport but also signalled a shift in the championship battle, leaving no doubt that the fight for the title had reached an unprecedented level of intensity.
Michael Schumacher wins 1998 British GP from pit lane
Micheal Schumacher is no stranger to Formula 1, having won seven world titles. However, what happened in the 1998 British Grand Prix was extraordinary as Schumacher’s rival, Mika Hakkinen, spun out while leading the race, and the safety car provided him with an opportunity to seize the lead. However, he incurred a 10-second stop-go penalty for overtaking during the safety car period.
Although Schumacher entered the pit lane on the final lap to serve the penalty, when he crossed the finish line in the pit lane, he claimed victory. McLaren appealed this surprising decision, but the race result stood, cementing Schumacher’s place in the history books as the only driver to win a Formula 1 race from the pit lane.
Carlos Sainz becomes a Grand Prix winner
Carlos Sainz has been one of those unlucky drivers who have come close to winning a race multiple times but have always fallen short. However, the 2022 British GP changed the Ferrari driver’s fate as he finally ended his winless streak after 149 races.
Securing pole position in qualifying, Sainz found himself alongside Red Bull’s formidable driver, Max Verstappen, on the front row. Despite a first-lap crash, the Spaniard displayed remarkable determination and skill, fending off challenges from Verstappen and his teammate, Charles Leclerc. And with each passing lap, he extended his lead, ultimately securing his maiden win after 150 attempts.
Nigel Mansell Gives Ayrton Senna a Lift
The 1991 British GP was an interesting race as the circuit had recently undergone significant modifications, transforming it into a more technical track and setting the stage for an intense competition. Although local hero Nigel Mansell emerged victorious, it was his act of sportsmanship that made the headlines.
This is because Ayrton Senna, driving for McLaren, ran out of fuel on the final lap, relegating him to a fourth-place finish after starting the race from second position. In a remarkable display of goodwill, Mansell offered Senna a ride on his victory lap, transcending their fierce rivalry in a moment that would forever be etched in Formula 1 history.
Lewis Hamilton’s dominance at 2008 British GP
Lewis Hamilton’s prowess at the British Grand Prix is undeniable, having won the race multiple times. However, none can compare to his maiden victory at his home circuit in 2008—a display of skill and dominance that left a lasting impression on the Formula 1 world.
In only his second season of Formula 1, Hamilton fended off an early challenge from Kimi Räikkönen and set off into the distance, leaving his rivals behind. What followed was a breathtaking demonstration of skill and speed as Hamilton not only established a commanding lead but also lapped all the drivers except for the top three finishers, underscoring his dominance in what can only be described as a remarkable performance.
