F1: What to expect from Daniel Ricciardo in the Hungarian GP 2023

The Australian driver has returned to the Formula 1 grid midway through the 2023 season
Daniel Ricciardo’s return to Formula 1 has been one of the most exciting news for fans, who have eagerly awaited his presence on the track throughout the entire season. And although he would be driving possibly the slowest car on track, this move will allow Red Bull to assess if he could be a potential candidate for the second Red Bull seat, should Perez’s dry run continue.
What to expect from Daniel Ricciardo at the Hungarian GP?
It's no secret that the Hungarian Grand Prix holds a special place in Ricciardo’s heart, as it was at this very track in 2014, during his debut year with Red Bull, that he secured his first-ever F1 victory. As the lights went out, Ricciardo’s driving skills came to the fore, showcasing some serious race craft while others struggled to find grip.
Although the fortunate timing of the first safety car allowed him to make an early pit stop, his fierce duel against the dominant Lewis Hamilton further showcased his racing talent.
Fast forward to 2023, his impressive times at the Pirelli tire test at Silverstone were the reason that earned him the seat at AlphaTauri. Therefore, for Daniel, this comeback represents more than just a race, as it is his chance to showcase his talent once again. And should the Australian find his old form and deliver remarkable performances with AlphaTauri, he could once again be in the spotlight for a possible return to the senior team.
“I appreciate the car is going to have its limitations. It might not have as much grip as the Red Bull I drove a few days ago, but if it feels relatively balanced, then that’s something I can work with,” said Daniel in a recent interview.
A new team leader at AlphaTauri
For AlphaTauri and Red Bull, this move was a no-brainer as Nyck wasn’t performing to the levels they had hoped for and Ricciardo, a seasoned driver with numerous podium finishes and several race victories under his belt, brings a wealth of experience to the table, which could ultimately prove invaluable in helping AlphaTauri achieve its goals.
Furthermore, this move would not only put the pressure back on Yuki, who has enjoyed a healthy lead over Nyck this season, but also allow Red Bull to evaluate him in comparison to a seasoned driver.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Daniel back into the team. There’s no doubt about his driving skill, and he already knows many of us, so his integration will be easy and straightforward,” said AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost.
