Formula 1 has arrived in the US to kick off the triple-header.

After a short break following the Singapore GP, Formula 1 (F1) returns with the United States Grand Prix, which will take place from October 22 to October 25, 2026, at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. The race will kick off another triple-header, followed by the Mexico City Grand Prix and the São Paulo Grand Prix.

The race also carries massive anticipation, as there is a possibility that Kimi Antonelli bags the Drivers’ Championship and becomes the youngest ever World Champion in F1. A win for Kimi would mean that he would break Sebastian Vettel’s record and become the youngest ever World Champion.

Vettel currently holds the record as the youngest Champion, winning his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days old. Additionally, if Kimi wins, he will become the first Italian driver to win the title since Alberto Ascari, who won consecutive titles in 1952 and 1953 driving for Ferrari.

But with six races remaining, there are a lot of scenarios that could end up deciding who drives away with the World title in 2026, and here we will have a look at them.

Can Kimi Antonelli clinch the title at COTA, or will a challenger halt his title dreams?

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli currently leads the Championship with 340 points, holding a 102-point advantage over his teammate George Russell, who sits second in the standings. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton is third, trailing the young Italian by 111 points.

To secure the 2026 drivers’ championship in Texas, Antonelli needs to build a lead of at least 125 points over either Russell or Hamilton. With the points available this weekend, a victory on Sunday is the only way he can achieve that target.

Kimi winning the US GP would also eliminate Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris from the championship battle. The three currently hold the fourth, fifth, and sixth spot in the Championship, respectively.

Is there any hope for George Russell’s first World title?

A win for Kimi at COTA would leave Russell and Hamilton as the only drivers capable of challenging Antonelli for the title. A victory in Austin would take Antonelli’s tally to 365 points, putting him 127 points ahead of Russell and 136 clear of Hamilton.

For Russell to remain in the title contention, he would need to finish eighth or better if Antonelli wins at COTA. A P8 result would leave the Mercedes driver 123 points behind, keeping his championship hopes alive with five races still remaining in the 2026 season.

Finishing P9, however, would not be enough for Russell. Although he would end the weekend exactly 125 points behind Antonelli, his teammate would clinch the championship through the countback rule.

Antonelli would have nine Grand Prix victories with the anticipated win at COTA, while Russell could have no more than eight, having won three races so far.

When two drivers are level on points, the number of race victories serves as the first tie-breaker. As a result, Russell would be unable to overturn Antonelli’s advantage even if he matched him on points.

On the other hand, Hamilton faces an entirely different challenge. If Antonelli takes the chequered flag first in Austin, the Ferrari driver would need to finish fourth or higher to prevent the Italian from being crowned champion.

A fourth-place finish would leave Hamilton 124 points behind Antonelli, keeping the championship mathematically open with five races remaining. However, if Hamilton finishes fifth while Antonelli clinches another win at COTA, the gap would increase to 126 points, officially handing the title to the Italian sensation.

When and where will the 2026 United States Grand Prix take place?

The 2026 United States Grand Prix will take place from October 22 to 25 at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, with the main race scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at 3:00 PM CT/ 1:30 AM IST (Monday).

Who is leading the 2026 F1 Drivers’ Championship?

Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship with 340 points, followed by George Russell in second place with 238 points and Lewis Hamilton in third with 229 points.
