Former Rockstar developer believes another open-world game could rival GTA VI
There is no doubt that GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games and the main frontrunner for winning Game of the Year in 2026. However, ex-Rockstar animator Mike York thinks there might be a competitor.

What makes Crimson Desert a threat?
In a recent YouTube video, Mike has praised Pearl Abyss upcoming open-world action adventure game and the latest overview trailers. This game’s open-world immersions, diverse activities and so many features make this a standout release this year.
Here’s what Mike York has said in his video:
“This game could be Game of the Year. And the reason for that is because of how much you can get lost in this game… it really is a contender when it comes to all the cool stuff all this game kind of has to offer.”
He also further added that if GTA 6 drops the ball, then Crimson Desert could be Game of the Year. If GTA VI wasn’t releasing this year, then this game could easily win GOTY, from what it looks like.
Recently, it was also revealed that this game will not have a microtransaction shop, not an RPG, no levels or XP, you gain new abilities by finding “artifacts” in the world or learning them by doing quests, players can buy and craft gears, the world is not level gated and open-world action adventure genre.

There has always been speculation that GTA 6 might get another delay and slip past to a 2027 release. But for now, the game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
