How big is the Assassin’s Creed Shadows map?

Feudal Japan is big enough to enjoy
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the latest Ubisoft game that takes the players toward Feudal Japan which is packed with stealth, storyline and samurai showdowns.
If you’re wondering how big this open-world playground is, you are not alone. Let’s look at additional details in this article.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows map size
The map size is really huge with bigger landscapes. According to creative director Jonathan Dumont, the game is “roughly similar” to Assassin’s Creed Origins and covers approximately 80 km², similar to ancient Egypt but with a Japanese touch.
This is slightly less than Valhalla’s 94 km² sprawl, but still far larger than Mirage’s modest Baghdad. It is split into nine distinct provinces:
- Wakasa
- Omi
- Tamba
- Yamashiro
- Iga
- Harima
- Settsu
- Yamato
- Kii

This map is filled with rugged terrain, mountains and dense forests which makes the map even more bigger and good looking.
Ubisoft is pushing immersion hard with an optional mode that removes map markers and routes. You’re left to travel by gut and grit, which magnifies the map’s scale. Shadows may take somewhat longer to explore than Valhalla’s England (about 120 km² with DLC) because of its challenging terrain, including steep peaks and no “follow road” shortcuts.
How to master navigation in Shadows?
If you want to master navigation and have an easy time while traveling in feudal Japan, make sure to pay attention to these:
- Sync Viewpoints: Unfog the map and spot key areas.
- Set Markers: Tag places you want to revisit—it’s your DIY compass.
- Hire Scouts: Send out finite Scouts to pinpoint objectives.
- Guided Mode: For a stress-free stroll, toggle on full markers.
The best tip is to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows a lot. Spend more game hours into the game and you will easily become quite comfortable with the map, routes and even with combat.
