How did Lorien Testard create Clair Obscur Expedition 33 soundtrack?

There is no doubt that the Clair Obscur Expedition 33 soundtrack is just a masterpiece. Sometimes you will even forget about the game and battle, will just enjoy the music.
This is an original soundtrack which is composed by Lorien Testard. In a recent interview with The Mirror UK, he shared his expertise and journey from SoundCloud to scoring 2025’s highest-rated RPG.
From SoundCloud to Stardom
Believe it or not, Lorien Testard is a first-time video game composer. He was discovered by the game director Guillaume Broche on SoundCloud, where he posted weekly video game-inspired compositions.
According to Lorien:
“Guillaume reached out after hearing my work. We shared a vision for a dream game, and that’s how I began scoring what became Clair Obscur Expedition 33.”
Capturing the game’s environment
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has many varied environments, which give a feeling of a Belle Époque aesthetic and it’s very pretty.
Lorien mirrored this aesthetic in his Clair Obscur Expedition 33 soundtrack. He told the Mirror about how every music reflects each environment and character.
His main aim was to give players an unbelievable, immersive experience with this emotional world. I think he really nailed it with this goal of his.

Throughout the game, the soundtrack and music accompany players in their journey to defeat the paintress.
Lorien says:
“I wanted every moment—exploration, combat, cutscenes—to have its own musical identity,”
Recording with live musicians
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 soundtrack was initially composed as a solo by him. Later, it was incorporated with live recordings with the Curieux Orchestra and vocalist Alice Duport-Percier.
Recording the soundtrack live was his dream and the musicians really poured their heart and soul into it.
The 154 tracks were not pre-planned, but rather evolved naturally. “I composed daily, inspired by the world’s colors,” Testard adds.
Over 154 tracks were created, with selections to ensure that each fit exactly. He hopes that the music will inspire players to form personal connections, resulting in a “playful bond” that resonates uniquely.
