The latest example is ‘PEAK’, the mountain climbing game

Everyone knows that the current gaming industry is in the downpit with all those massive layoffs, cancelled and flopped games. Meanwhile, the Indie Game development might be on its best run.

From Schedule 1, R.E.P.O, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and now PEAK, these are not only giving thought competition to A.A.A games but are also beating them in numbers.

Unleashed Studio Entertainment, a San Diego-based independent developer, recently took to LinkedIn to claim that an increase in independent game creation could save the faltering industry.

Why Indie Games matter now?

From the start, Indie Game development has been very important in the gaming industry and the same goes for the amazing Indie Games.

The current gaming industry is struggling way too much with the underwhelming AAA games and massive layoffs and cancellations of games.

The best example could be seen in Microsoft and Xbox, where many games were cancelled and so many people lost their jobs.

Recently, we have seen big budgets and pricing for the AAA games, but their performance was not up to the mark.

On the other hand, Indie games and AA games like Schedule 1, R.E.P.O, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and now PEAK have proven to everyone that you don’t need big budgets or teams to deliver top-quality games for the gamers.

Unleashed Studio emphasizes that independent developers, unencumbered by publisher ambitions, are passionate about returning gaming to its roots: the gamers. Big companies like EA and Ubisoft are being pushed to reconsider their strategy as the AAAA model’s long-term viability is called into doubt.

More focus on gamers

AAA publishers and big gaming companies seems to have forgotten their roots. All they now care about is getting big numbers, more microtransactions and forcing politics and agendas into their game.

On the other hand, Indie developers team works in few number, sometimes only one person making the game, who has all the control over their own game. They craft the game for the gamers.

This has slowly started to see results and now so many Indie games are coming to the limelight and getting more popular. The current best example is “PEAK” which has already sold 5 million copies in one month.

Final thoughts

It’s not like every AAA publisher or gaming company is struggling. Kojima Productions recently delivered Death Stranding 2, which can be considered one of the best games of 2025 and a strong contender for GOTY 2025.

All they need to do is focus more on crafting the games for the gamers. They should think about what gamers actually want to play, instead of forcing what they want. (Example: Dragon Age Veilguard)
