After long rumors and speculations, Nintendo has now finally announced the official Star Fox 64 remake, which is all set to release on June 25, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2.
This game will follow the original 64 title, but the players will experience enhanced visuals, redesigned characters, fresh gameplay and expanded multiplayer mode. Let’s check out more details in this article.
Star Fox 64 gets a modern remake
The remake uses the same old stage designs that fans are familiar with, but everything else has been spruced up and artistically altered.
Fans will get enhanced particle effects, which have been further improved with environmental detail, so that the game looks more modern than the original title.
Zoness and Sector Y locations will now feature more richer effects, improved lighting & more detailed ship models.
The character designs in the Star Fox remake have also been updated and it draws inspiration from the original title.
In addition, there are new cinematic sequences and mission briefings between stages that give more life to Fox McCloud’s interactions with the other members of the crew.

Challenge mode & new difficulties option
In the remake, Nintendo has also added three difficulty settings:
- Easy
- Normal
- Expert
In easy mode, newbies will get larger shield gauges, while expert mode is specifically for veteran pilots who want greater challenge in the game.
There is also a new Challenge mode, which will allow players to replay the completed stages with additional objectives that are not included in the campaign mode.
Return of battle mode
The multiplayer battle mode will also return in the new Star Fox game and it will have some major upgrades. You can now compete in 4v4 matches across three different multiplayer stages.

- Dodging meteorites
- Collecting energy
- Recovering cargo from space pirates
Nintendo has also confirmed support for online matchmaking, private lobbies and local multiplayer with the help of GameShare and GameChat.
New Switch 2 features & co-op gameplay
New Star Fox remake will also take advantage of the latest Switch 2 hardware. Players can use JoyCon 2 mouse targeting for more precise aiming during combat.
Co-op gameplay has also been expanded, with one person piloting the Arwing and the second controlling the shooting mechanics.
