This dance emote might get removed from the game

Recently, a legal dispute has emerged involving Sony Music Holdings over the alleged use of the ‘Bye Bye Bye dance’ in Fortnite and the Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

The Choreographer Darrin Henson has filed a lawsuit that claims that his work was used without proper permission in both a movie and a game. Let’s check out more details in this article.

Lawsuit filed over unauthorized use

According to the recent reports, the complaint was filed on March 27, 2026. It argues that Sony didn’t have the proper rights and authority to license the choreography.

Henson has asserted that he is the rightful owner of the dance and is seeking full recognition, along with compensation for any revenue that it has generated by its use.

The action specifically aims at declaratory relief, attempting to prove ownership and claim all the revenues that relate to the choreography by Sony and its partners.

Origins of the iconic dance

The Bye Bye Bye act was first done by NSYNC in 1999 in a medley during the Radio Music Awards. It was an instant global dance hit, and Henson was a winner in the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000.

Later, this dance and song returned in the Deadpool and Wolverine movie. In the opening sequence, Ryan Reynolds performs the dance routine along with the song.

This became so popular that even the dance and emote were added to the Fortnite game as well.

Conclusion

Although Epic Games has not been named in the lawsuit, there is a good chance that this emote and dance might get vaulted forever and won’t return in the future as well.

As for the case, the fans have to wait and see how the situation develops around the lawsuit and how it will impact Fortnite and Sony in the future.
