Fans are disappointed by the end of physical discs!
Sony’s recent announcement about ending the PlayStation physical disc starting in January 2028 has sparked an even bigger reaction and discussion than GTA 6 pre-orders.
There was no doubt that Rockstar Games was going to attract everyone’s attention after announcing the pre-order details and pricing for GTA VI. However, Sony went one step ahead and did something that upset the whole gaming community.
Sony PlayStation digital-only future attracts a lot of criticism
Sony has officially confirmed that they will stop producing the PlayStation physical game disc for games starting from January 2028.
This announcement went so big that it has attracted over 140 million views on X compared to the GTA 6 pre-order announcement, which only went up to 90-100 million.
This decision wasn’t a surprise, as the company has been preparing for this transition by reducing physical disc media production and closing disc production facilities.
At this point, we can say that this might be the coming end of physical game discs in the gaming industry. Everything might move to digital only.
Even in an era of digital downloads, there are still many gamers who like to own games physically, preserve and save them and collect them, and sell or share them with others. This caused Sony’s announcement to be met with a lot of criticism on social media platforms.

Backlash still going strong
The backlash and criticism from the fans and gamers is still ongoing. PlayStation has even tweeted anything since this announcement.
The players are continuously raising their concerns about losing ownership rights, higher digital pricing, and long-term preservation of the games.
It would be interesting to see whether PlayStation goes back on their word after facing such a huge backlash or they continue with their decision.
Why are fans upset about Sony ending physical PlayStation games?
Many players prefer physical copies because they offer true ownership, can be resold or shared, and help preserve games for future generations.
When will Sony stop producing PlayStation physical discs?
According to Sony’s announcement, physical game discs are expected to be discontinued starting in 2028.
How popular was Sony’s announcement on social media?
The announcement reportedly received over 140 million views on X, surpassing the 83 million views generated by Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 pre-order announcement.
