Ubisoft’s commitment to a flawless launch

Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassins Creed Shadows, the highly anticipated open-world action RPG set in feudal Japan, will not face any further delays, despite a recent expansion of its development timeframe.

The announcement follows Star Wars Outlaws’ commercial underperformance, which caused Ubisoft to delay Shadows to ensure a polished and better game.

More information about the delay of Assassins Creed Shadows

Ubisoft’s chief corporate finance officer, Frédérick Duguet, stated during the company’s most recent quarterly earnings call that the game was already “feature complete” at the time of the delay. The decision to delay the release was taken to ensure that the gaming experience is “impeccable from day one.”

“The delay was about ensuring that we deliver an impeccable experience,” Duguet explained, “We’re now confident in our February launch, having good visibility on delivering a high-quality game.”

Important points at investor calls

  • There will always be bugs but the day-one experience will be well-optimized for the fans.
  • They have good visibility on the fact that the game will come on time and with ‘excellent quality’ (thus another delay is quite improbable).
  • Expect a successful launch for the game, enabling the corporation to achieve a record quarter of 900 million euros (January – March 2025).
  • They overall will launch ‘high quality paid content’ for Assassin’s Creed every (financial) year (a Black Flag remake is rumored for November 2025)

Extra budget

The extra time spent on development was not without expense. Ubisoft revealed that this extra effort will cost the game around USD 21.7 million. However, this investment aims to improve the overall quality of the game, ensuring that gamers get the best possible experience.

Assassins Creed Shadows will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 14, 2025. Notably, it will premiere directly on Steam without a Season Pass, resulting in a repricing of the Collector’s Edition to reflect the lack of extra content bundles.
