What does it mean for Assassin’s Creed & other franchises?

The big news has been finally dropped as the gaming giant Ubisoft is teaming up with Tencent to spin off a new subsidiary valued at a whopping €4 billion ($4.3 billion USD).

This was announced on March 27, 2025 and in this deal, Tencent is going to invest €1.16 billion for a 25% stake. Fans are eagerly wanting to know what is now going to happen with the gaming creative department. Let’s check out more details in this article.

What does the future hold?

As reported earlier, Ubisoft will be forming a new subsidiary with Tencent. Here’s what that means:

  • Ubisoft will be creating a new company that will only focus on its major franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and The Division.
  • Tencent is going to buy 25% of this company for €1.16 billion.
  • Ubisoft is going to own 75% of this company and it seems like they will still be the head for the creative control.
  • This deal was done to save and grow the company better with Tencent’s massive investment.
  • This indicates that Ubisoft is not considering selling the company as a whole but has instead formed a partnership with Tencent to stay afloat and support all of its important properties.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot says, “These three brands reflect your talent and efforts that turned them into beloved franchises.”

He also implied that the cash injection, disclosed in a March 27 news statement, will “accelerate changes” that Ubisoft had been considering for months, mirroring suggestions from the internal Ubisoft XP poll.

Tencent, which has had a 9.99% ownership in the company since 2022 (according to Bloomberg), is establishing deeper roots in Western gaming IPs, such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows (available now) and Rainbow Six Siege’s live-service goldmine.

But it isn’t all high fives. De Waubert admitted to “uncertainty and questions” among staff, promising transparent updates even if all answers are not yet available.

With almost 2,000 personnel across those studios (according to the official website), the shift is significant—especially following cutbacks and the problematic launch of Star Wars Outlaws last year.
