What’s next for the studios?

This is the biggest bombshell of this week as Warner Bros. Games has canceled its long-awaited Wonder Woman game. They also shut down three studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier broke the story, causing shock and curiosity among the gaming community. Let’s check out more details in this article.

Focus on the next projects

Warner Bros. Games have now shifted their focus towards the Harry Potter games, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC Comics, with a spotlight on Batman.

The recent flop with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has made them think twice before committing to their future projects.

In an internal memo, JB Perrette, head of games and streaming, acknowledged that “too many” recent products “really missed the mark.” He emphasized the importance of making “substantial changes” in order to prioritize “fewer but bigger” projects.

Official Statement from Warner Bros. Games

Warner Bros. Games shared an official statement with Kotaku and Insider Gaming:

“We’ve had to make some tough calls to realign our studios and investments around crafting top-notch games with our core franchises—Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. After much thought, we’re closing Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This shift isn’t about the talent or teams—it’s a strategic move. Wonder Woman game development won’t continue; we aimed to deliver the best for this iconic hero, but it no longer fits our priorities. It’s a hard day, but we’re committed to bouncing back with high-quality games for our fans, aiming for profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”

Thoughts

We really could’ve had a Wonder Woman game set on Themyscira fighting Circe, Medusa, and Cheetah using the Nemesis System.

Many fans are angry about this as Warner Bros. Games has patented this system from Monolith Studios and hasn’t used this so far. Wonder Woman game was set to reintroduce the Nemesis System and fans were quite excited about this. But now, we don’t even know when this system will be back.
