A very nice take on a Souls-like game from Leenzee

Leenzee Games’ first Souls-like game, with a cost of $50 & $60 for a title, is safe to say that it was a right bet for them. My Wuchang Fallen Feathers review is done after completing the first walkthrough, which ended up being around 30 hours.

I had a good expectation for this game because it was from China and after Black Myth Wukong‘s success, most of the eyes would be interested in any project that comes next from them.

I was surprised to see that they really delivered a true Souls-like experience with Wuchang. You will be able to see many inspirations taken from FromSoftware games and blend them well together.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers review

Good world setup & levels

Leenzee made sure to build a good Souls-like setup and levels for the game, which keeps things interesting and won’t let things become stale.

There are different biomes like forest regions, snow regions, etc. and things become quite crazy towards the end game.

The best part is that they have taken inspiration from Dark Souls and how many things are connected, which is a very good thing for a Souls-like game.

There is no world map, pretty similar to the Black Myth Wukong setting. You progress through the story to the next level and you can use the shrine to visit back to any level or area, similar to Sekiro.

The game also runs pretty well on PS5, giving up to 60fps on performance mode with only a slight fps drop at some point. You won’t have any problem on PS5 Pro and PC. There is also a New Game Plus, which I am going to start pretty soon.

A story that keeps things engaging with great visuals

One of my major concerns before getting into the game was the story. However, Leenzee has done a great job of delivering a story revolves around Wuchang and the feathering curse.

It isn’t an extraordinary story that blew my mind, but it was much better and kept me interested to keep going and learn more about the lore.

The setup is pretty similar to the Dark Souls game. There is a curse in the game; you learn more about it as you progress through the game, engage with NPCs and items to get the lore.

Visuals and graphics are amazing and the world will feel pretty similar to Sekiro, Nioh and sometimes even Bloodborne and Dark Souls type.

Best respec system & gears

I will just say outright that Wuchang Fallen Feathers has the best respec system compared to any other Souls game.

This is a skill tree similar to Diablo and Path of Exile 2, but the best part is that you can respec anything at any time for free. You don’t need some sort of extra currency or items to respec your point.

You can change your playstyle and build depending on the given situation at any point, which is an amazing feature in this game. The only con is that you might have to get some useless feature, ability, or skill before you reach for the desired one.

There are many items you get that are quite helpful in the game. Amazing outfits with a great set of effects and accessories. Some outfits even give Stellar Blade a run for its money.

Best part of Wuchang Fallen Feathers: Combat & gameplay mechanics

This is the part that makes me wanna play Wuchang Fallen Feathers again and again, trying different builds and playstyles.

The game heavily relies on dodge mechanics, with Sky Born Might and Madness system playing a huge part in the combat.

You earn Sky Born Might by attacking and dodging the attacks and then you can use it for your and weapons, spells and abilities. For Madness, the more madness you have, the more damage you will deal, but you will also take more damage.

Small tip, always try to stay in Madness, it is very risky as when you die, you will fight your inner demon (Your copy) to get back your Red Mercury. (Ruins or Souls)

There are so many mechanics like: Spells, abilities, different types of weapons, weapons skills & abilities, your temperance arm, acupoints and more.

There are many weapons and every weapon is pretty unique. You can block with AXE and stagger enemies. Dual swords are fast and can negate some enemies’ attacks, and a longsword can parry and is pretty balanced. The spears are the worst.

Some cons for this game

There are some cons for me, like the music or boss music isn’t that amazing, which I was expecting it to be, because it’s from China. I think FromSoftware still does that better than anyone.

It has some great music at certain points, but decent at best. There are some balancing issues as Magic might feel overpowered at first, but later you can do the same damage as the highest spell with just 2-3 swings of your blade.

I love Spears as a weapon, but in this game, it has more of a defensive approach. You evade and counterattack with it and against some bosses, your counterattacks won’t work.

Final Conclusion for Wuchang Fallen Feathers review

Overall, Wuchang Fallen Feathers is an amazing Souls-like game and it’s worth $50-$60 in today’s economy, where you get $70-$80 slop AAA games.

If you love Souls games, you will love this one as well. You can easily spend 50-100 hours in the game and you won’t feel bored with it.

Our Review Score: 8.5/10, Reviewed & Played on: PS5
