No more physical disc drive for Xbox Project Helix
According to a report from Windows Central, Xbox’s next-generation console is expected to ship without a built-in disc drive.
Well-known insider, Jez Corden, has claimed that the company is now moving toward digital game purchases and services like Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere.
This has also been Microsoft’s long-term strategy of expanding the digital ecosystem across PC, Cloud gaming and consoles.
Recently, PlayStation has also announced that it will stop making physical disc games starting from January 2028.
Microsoft is working on a solution
One of the biggest gamers’ and players’ concerns is the backward compatibility of the digital-only Xbox Project Helix. What will happen to Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs?
According to the report, Microsoft is developing a licensing solution internally, reportedly codenamed Project Positron.
The technology is said to verify the authenticity of the game’s physical possession, making it possible for gamers to play the game digitally through Project Helix, without requiring the use of a disc drive.
Conclusion
For now, nothing is officially confirmed or announced by Microsoft yet. But there is no doubt that the gaming industry is leaning heavily on digital purchases and subscriptions.
