Indian Golf Updates: Shubhankar Sharma Drops in Rankings, Aditi Ashok Maintains Her Position

India’s Anirban Lahiri completed a fantastic week at Close House in Newcastle after finishing tied third in the $2 million International Series England, an event sanctioned by the Asian Tour. Lahiri had rounds of 70, 69, 69, and 68 for an overall tally of eight-under 276, eight strokes behind eventual champion Andy Ogletree of the USA. Englishman Ian Poulter finished second, a stroke ahead of Lahiri.

The 36-year-old’s effort helped him pocket $126,000 (approx. Rs 1.04 crore) in prize money and climb 20 spots to be placed 127th in the world rankings. Lahiri had switched to Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Golf Series after plying him trade on the PGA Tour. 

According to reports, he received a $7 million signing bonus to become part of the breakaway league, which is on the verge of completing a landmark agreement with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) on the one hand and the DP World Tour and PGA Tour on the other. 

Barring Lahiri, other Indians Shubhankar Sharma (World No. 178), Gaganjeet Bhullar (World No. 391) and Rashid Khan (World No. 518) fell the rankings ladder. 

Aditi Ashok continues to stay at World No. 48

India’s highest-ranked women’s golfer, Aditi Ashok, stayed at World No. 48 after finishing tied for 40th in the AIG Women’s Open. The four-time Ladies European Tour winner shot into the limelight for coming tantalisingly close to winning an Olympic medal at Tokyo 2020. The LPGA Tour regular finished fourth behind eventual champion Nelly Korda. 

Diksha Dagar, two-time LET champion, jumped 16 places on the Rolex Rankings to reach 160th after her tied sixth result at the $1.5 million ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland. Vani Kapoor (World No. 504) and Amandeep Drall are the next-best Indians on the world rankings.
