Despite being “erratic off the tee,” McIlroy was pleased with his start, making four birdies and an eagle in his round. Last year, he finished in a tie for 19th place at 1-under par in the 2023 PGA Championship. McIlroy’s quest for the elusive green jacket at the 2024 Masters came up short, with him tied for 22nd place at 4-over par.

However, there are signs of encouragement for him, as he has made his best iron play in four years at the Valero Texas Open, gaining over 7.5 strokes on approach shots.
