Top four team will qualify for the 2025 World Women’s Handball Championships.

This December, India will host the 20th Asian Women’s Handball Championship (AWHC) at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi, making sporting history. The Asian Women’s Handball Championship 2024 will be organised by the Asian Handball Federation. The tournament will take place in South Asia for the first time, let alone India, from December 3 to 10

The nation has hosted the Asian Women’s Youth Handball Championship several times, demonstrating its dedication to promoting handball in India. India is now hosting the Asian Women’s Handball Championship 2024 which will help India’s goal to become a regional hub in the sport.

India will compete for a top-four berth that guarantees qualifying for the 2025 World Women’s Handball Championships in Germany and the Netherlands, hoping to create history as the host nation for the 2024 AWHC. Ahead of them will be 16-time champion South Korea along with the former winners Japan, and Kazakhstan.

The 20th edition of the tournament will take place in India. Matches will be played at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi.

India’s performance history at Asian Women’s Handball Championship 2024

This will be India’s eighth appearance in this prestigious championship, having previously participated in 1993, 2000, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022. India is the only country from South Asia to qualify for the Asian Women’s Handball Championships.

India’s first win in the competition came in 2008 when they defeated Qatar in Thailand. Four years later, India registered its biggest victory defeating Kuwait (63-6) and also won two matches in a single edition for the first time. In the last edition, India finished sixth out of the 10 nations, winning three matches.

South Korea are the most successful team in the tournament history, having won it for a record 16 times. They are the six-time defending champions and will be eager to defend their title. Apart from South Korea, only Kazakhstan (twice) and Japan (once) have won the tournament.

Tournament format

The tournament will feature eight teams after Uzbekistan and Australia withdrew. The teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each. Each team will play each other once. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Semifinals. The bottom two teams will play a classification match.

Fans in India can watch the live streaming of matches on SportCast India’s YouTube channel. DD Sports will broadcast the event. However, only the finals day will be telecast live. For the rest of the matches, highlights will be shown.
