Asian Champions Trophy 2023 is the seventh edition of the tournament organised by the Asian Hockey Federation. The previous edition was played in 2021 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with South Korea winning their maiden title, beating Japan 4-2 in the shootout of the finals after drawing 3-3 in the regulation time.

Malaysia had to withdraw from the tournament and miss the Asian Champions Trophy for the first time ever in the tournament’s history. The Malaysian Federation cited the restrictive COVID quarantine regulations as the reason behind the withdrawal. 

Malaysia, otherwise, have finished third in all of the editions they have participated in and played in. They even hosted the 2016 edition in Kuantan, when India won their second title. And now, in the 2023 edition, the Malaysian men’s hockey team will be making their comeback to the tournament.

The Malaysian team comes to the tournament on the back of some inspiring form, having won gold at the Southeast Asian Games and the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. They also finished runners-up in the latest edition of the Asia Cup.
