The Green Shirts will begin their campaign on August 3 against Malaysia.
The Pakistan men’s hockey team has arrived in India today via the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab to participate in the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy 2023 scheduled to be held in Chennai at the Mayor Radhakrishnan hockey stadium from August 03 to 12. The men in green are later scheduled to fly from Amritsar and reach Chennai by 9 PM approximately.
Pakistan have won the tournament thrice and last won the trophy in 2018 – joint winners with India. They have achieved immense success in the tournament and will look to start their preparation for the Asian Games which features almost the same set of teams at the Asian Champions Trophy 2023.
Overall, Pakistan have played 38 matches in the competition winning 21 and losing ten matches.
After being a powerhouse in the 1970s and 1980s the domination in the sport has been reduced significantly. The team failed to qualify for the men’s World Cup held earlier in India. The Pakistan team now will look to revive it presence in Asia and fast forward globally as well.
The tournament was inaugurated in the year 2011 and was held held annually till 2013. From 2016, the tournament has been staged biennally with the last edition held in 2021. South Korea claimed their maiden title in the last edition by defeating Japan in the shoot-offs.
Earlier in the day, the Indian team arrived in Chennai at 2 AM after a long long travel from Spain. They are set to play China in their opening encounter. The much awaited Indo-Pak clash is scheduled to be held in August 9th.
