FIH abandons trial of new penalty corner rules with immediate effect
The International Hockey Federation President Tayyab Ikram confirmed the news.
The newly developed penalty corner rule has been abandoned by FIH (International Hockey Federation) with immediate effect. The news was confirmed by president Tayyab Ikram during the half-time of the semi-final match between South Korea and Malaysia in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023.
FIH President Tayab Ikram, “We as FIH decided to put on hold and even abandon the new penalty corner rule trial with immediate effect particularly from the format proposed before. So, we have abandoned the trial and will not be considered but at the same time we will have re-evaluation on the further options and are ready to keep the penalty corner in the same format.”
He further added, “If there is a change going forward, then it will be around the same format but with more dynamic ways. But at any time, we will not compromise any method with respect to dangerous play and will keep the safety of our athletes. It is very important for us to ensure the safety of our athletes.”
The new rule was developed to reduce the safety of players but after the news developed several nations showed their displeasure to the rule prompting FIH to take the decision with immediate effect. The new rule was up to be tested in domestic tournaments across several countries and after assessment was to be implemented after Paris Olympics 2024.

What was the proposed Penalty Corner Rule?
According to the newly proposed penalty rule, all the attackers except the pusher must start at the backline must start atleast 5m outside circle (D). The ball should be allowed to travel outside the 5m dotted line before it can be played inside the D for the shot on goal. This gives defenders more time to react from the current rule and also helps reduce dangerous play.
