Bhubaneshwar legs starts today
The Indian women’s hockey team is set to begin its campaign in the FIH Pro League 2023-24 with a series of home matches against some of the top teams in the world in Odisha from Saturday.
The FIH Pro League is a global tournament that features nine of the best men’s and women’s teams, who play each other in a round-robin format over six months. The top four teams qualify for the grand final, where the winner is crowned as the FIH Pro League champion.
This will be India’s second appearance in the women’s FIH Pro League, after making a remarkable debut in the 2021-22 season, where they finished third behind Netherlands and Argentina. The Indian women’s hockey team earned a spot in the 2023-24 season after winning the inaugural FIH Hockey Nations Cup in December 2022, beating South Africa in the final.
The Indian women’s hockey team will face a tough challenge in the Odisha leg of the FIH Pro League, as they will take on four of the top 10 teams in the world rankings. All teams competing in Odisha will face each other once at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar before moving to the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.
World No. 8 India will play Asian Games champions China, world No. 10, in their first game on Saturday, followed by a clash with reigning Olympic champions and world No. 1 Netherlands on Sunday. India will then take on world No. 2 Australia on Wednesday before playing against the 12th-ranked USA on Friday.
The Indian women’s hockey team will be led by goalkeeper Savita Punia, who has been in fine form in recent tournaments. She will be assisted by veteran striker Vandana Katariya, who will return to the squad as vice-captain after missing the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Ranchi in January due to an injury. Katariya is one of the most experienced players in the team, with over 200 international caps and 64 goals to her name.
