Hockey India League is back with revamped structure.
The Hockey India League is set to make a grand return following a seven-year gap. Originally launched in 2013 as India’s top domestic hockey competition, this league aimed to take hockey in India up a few notches by offering an opportunity for local talent as well as international ones. However, it was halted in 2017.
The reconstituted HIL would now have for the first time both men and women teams. The league will comprise eight men’s teams and six women’s teams, and the matches are to be played in the two key venues. The men’s matches are to be held in Rourkela while that of women is to be held in Ranchi.
The revived Hockey India League will kick-start its first season with a brilliant opening ceremony scheduled for December 28 in Rourkela. The 2024 edition is sure to be a total game-changer for Indian hockey, providing opportunities for women’s hockey and thereby helping India’s likely prospects of improving its Olympic ranks.

Where and when will the Hockey India League 2024 player auction take place?
The auction for Hockey India League 2024 will take place from 13-15 October in New Delhi, with the men’s auction likely to be held on October 13-14 and the women’s auction on the next day.
Teams will be allowed to build a squad strength of 24 players, which must include at least 16 Indian players, with a mandatory inclusion of four U21 players. Up to eight international stars can be added to each squad, bringing a global flavour to the league.
Players will register under three price categories: Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh. However, there’s no upper limit on bidding which will allow franchises to compete fiercely for top talent
The FIH has supported the Hockey India League by granting it a exclusive window of 35 days for the next 10 years. This exclusive time slot allows a few of the world’s greatest players to participate without conflicting commitments, thereby placing the league on a pedestal that is higher on the global arena.
