Hockey India league returns to action after seven years.

The Hockey India League returns after seven years, beginning on December 28, with both men’s and women’s teams simultaneously. There will be eight men’s teams and six women’s teams competing in the league.Such a comeback is in need for Indian hockey. The male and female teams will have a better turn at the game. The league will comprise India’s best players along with other countries’ competitive players. The HIL has not been played since the year 2017, and it used to include only men’s teams.

When will Hockey India league (HIL) start?

The HIL 2024-25 season will go from December 28 to February 1, 2025. In this version, for the first time, women’s competitions will overlap with men’s competitions and feature eight teams in the men’s category and six teams in the women’s competition. A three-day player auction will be held from October 13 to 15 in New Delhi.

What will team composition look like?

A player auction will be held from October 13 to 15 in New Delhi. Players can register under three price categories: Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh, with no upper limit on bidding during the auction. Each team will have a 24-player squad, consisting of at least 16 Indian players (including 4 mandatory U21 players) and up to eight international stars. This mix aims to nurture local talent while adding international expertise to the league.

In the men’s tournament, teams can field four foreign players in the playing XI while that number goes up to five for the women’s league.

The Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 will be hosted in two key cities:

Ranchi, Jharkhand:
- Venue: Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium
- Will host: All women’s matches
- Special event: Women’s league final on January 26, 2025
Rourkela, Odisha:
- Venue: Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium
- Will host: All men’s matches
- Special event: Men’s final on February 1, 2025
