The Hockey India League returns after a wait of seven long years.

The long wait of hockey fans across the globe has ended as the Hockey India League is set to make a return at the end of the year. The big update though is that, along with the men’s competition, there will also be a women’s league. This marks the first time that a standalone women’s league will run concurrently with the men’s tournament, paving the way for a more inclusive and competitive future for Indian Hockey.

The men’s league will have a total of eight teams: Chennai, Lucknow, Punjab, West Bengal, Delhi, Odisha, Hyderabad and Ranchi. On the other hand, the women’s competition involves six franchisees, out of which four have been announced: Haryana, West Bengal, Delhi and Odisha.

This is a landmark moment for India’s national sport, with its popularity having risen to such great heights. India is the only team to have medalled in the men’s event at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The women’s team too have put on a number of impressive performances, the highlight being their fourth-place finish at Tokyo.

Apart from further raising the popularity of hockey in India, the league also provides an opportunity for youngsters to rub shoulders with the best in the world. The skillsets and temperament of the players could see a huge. Assuredly, the bench strength too will improve.

When will Hockey India League take place?

The Hockey India League is slated to begin on 28th December. The Women’s League final will take place on 26th January 2025, while the Men’s League final has been scheduled for 1st February 2025.

Where will the Hockey India League take place?

The Hockey India League will take place in two venues namely the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha and the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

The Birsa Munda Stadium is the largest fully seated hockey arena in the world, with a capacity of 20,011 seats. A marvel in architecture, the stadium co-hosted the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023.

The Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium was initially built in 1990, before being renovated later. It has a capacity of about 5000 and has hosted many national tournaments.

Where and how to watch live streaming and TV broadcast of Hockey India League in India?

The official broadcast digital partner for the Hockey India League has not been announced yet. Details are expected to be out soon. Star Sports broadcasted the league when it was last held.
