Australia has dominated India in hockey.

India and Australia are two nations that thrive on enjoying success in sports. The sportsmen from both countries set high standards for themselves and take a lot of pride in doing well for the nation. The last few years have witnessed some of the best action on the cricket field.

Much like how India has done well in Australia’s national game, the Aussies have done well in India’s national sport Hockey. Australia has been the Commonwealth Games, Champions in all seven editions the sport has been hosted.

In the 2022 Birmingham Games, it was India who challenged the Aussies for the Gold medal match. But they succumbed to a humiliating 7-0 loss in the finals. With its rich history, Indians are determined to bring back their legacy in this Olympics.

On that note, let’s look at the last five outings between these two. Ironically it was in a five-match Test series held earlier this year

#1. India 2–3 Australia, 15 June 2025

India suffered a 2-3 defeat to Australia yet again in Antwerp, marking their sixth straight loss in the FIH Pro League 2024-25.

Jugraj Singh’s penalty corner set up Sanjay for an early lead, but Australia hit back quickly with goals from Tim Brand and Blake Govers.

Cooper Burns added a third to give the hosts control, dominating the first half as India struggled to keep possession.

Dilpreet Singh pulled one back in the third quarter, but Australia managed the game expertly in the final quarter, limiting India’s chances. Despite Krishan Pathak’s heroics, India fell short, dropping to sixth in the standings.

#2. India 2–3 Australia, 14 June 2025

India’s struggles in the FIH Pro League continued with a heartbreaking 2-3 defeat to Australia in Antwerp. Abhishek gave India a dream start, scoring twice to put them 2-0 ahead midway through the third quarter.

Goalkeeper Suraj Karkera also created saves when he could to keep Australia at bay early on. However, India lost control late in the game. Nathan Ephraums pulled one back before Joel Rintala equalised in the final quarter.

With just 43 seconds left, Tom Craig deflected in the winner from a penalty corner, sealing India’s fifth straight defeat in the competition.

#3 India 3 – 2 Australia, August 2, 2024

India defeated Australia 3-2 in the men’s hockey Pool B match at the Paris 2024 Olympics, their first win against Australia since 1972. Abhishek (12’) and Harmanpreet Singh (13’, 32’) scored for India, while Thomas Craig (25’) and Blake Govers (55’) netted for Australia. Despite Australia’s 37 attacking circle penetrations, India, who had 54% possession, held on for the victory. The match took place at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium.

#4 Australia 5-1 India, April 6, 2024

Australia crushed the Indian men’s hockey team 1-5 in the opening test of the five-game series, despite expectations that they would at least up a respectable fight. From the beginning of the game, the Australians dictated the tempo.

In the last quarter, the Indian squad showed some promise, but it was already too late.Joel Rintala (37th), Tim Brand (3rd), Flynn Ogilvie (57th), and Tom Wickham (20th, 38th) were the other goal scorers for the winning team. Gurjant Singh scored the only goal for India in the 47th minute.

#5 Australia 4-2 India, April 7, 2024

Both teams started off slowly but the first blood went to Australia. The Kookaburras took the lead five minutes into the game when they won their first penalty corner. Jeremy Hayward took the ball and buried a low-drag flick past Indian goalie Bahadur Pathak to give his team the lead. But after enduring the storm, Jugraj Singh’s thunderous penalty corner helped India tie the score.

Before halftime, Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of India, converted a penalty corner into a two-to-one advantage. The Australians took control of the next quarter, adding two more goals to the tally thanks to field goals from Nathan Ephraums and Jacob Anderson.
