The matches between both sides are largely dominated by powerful Indian team.

The rivalry between India and China’s men’s hockey teams is not as intense or long-standing as some other international hockey rivalries. India have history on its side-at least in so much as playing the sport; China are a relatively new up-and-comer.

India have won eight Olympic gold medals in hockey, with the last coming in 1980. India also won the World Cup once and have several Asian Games titles. China, on the other hand, has never won a major international hockey tournament.

The two teams have faced each other mostly in Asian competitions such as the Asian Games and Asia Cup. India have dominated the matches, winning most of the games against China. China have usually been second to India but in the 2006 Asian Games, China won the bronze medal and finished ahead of India for the first time in a major tournament.

This result shocked many in the hockey world and was seen as a sign of China’s improving hockey program. India, however, have managed to maintain its upper hand in comparison with China in the recent past. India won gold at the 2022 Asian Games while China finished fourth.

The matches between both sides are actually more a regional competition rather than a deep-rooted historical rivalry. Both teams are trying to improve their standings in world hockey – India seeking to regain its former glory and China looking to establish itself as a hockey superpower.

India vs China hockey last five meetings

#5. India 2-0 China (September 27, 2014) — Asian Games 2014

India continued to dominate China as the colts secured a 2-0 victory over China at the Asian Games 2014. After a goalless first half, VR Raghunath scored a drag-flick goal in the 40th minute, followed by Birendra Lakra’s field goal in the 45th minute, giving India a 2-0 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Despite dominating possession, India’s performance was lacklustre, with their forward line struggling to penetrate China’s defense. The team’s early chances were wasted, and their penalty corner execution was poor, especially in the absence of injured drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh.

The match was closely contested, with both teams missing opportunities in the first quarter. However, after a sluggish start, India managed to secure the win with improved play in the second half.

#4. India 9-0 China (October 25, 2016) — Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2016

India handed a comprehensive performance as they romped past China 9-0 in a round-robin match of the Asian Champions Trophy here at Wisma Belia Hockey Stadium. Akashdeep Singh and Jasjit Singh Kular had two goals each, while goals were added by Affan Yousuf, Rupinder Pal Singh, Nikkin Thimmaiah, Lalit Upadhyay, and Devinder Walmiki in the Indian camp.

The Indian side dominated all the portions of the first half as they took a 4-0 lead into half-time, after goals from Akashdeep (9th, 39th), Yousuf (19th), and Kular (22nd). The second half was no different as Kular struck in the 51st, Rupinder in the 25th, Thimmaiah in the 34th, Upadhyay in the 37th, and Walmiki in the 41st. India had 24 shots on target as opposed to China’s five, and their goalkeeper, Akash Chitke, was pretty quiet.

#3. India 7-2 China (August 03, 2023) — Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2023

In the Indian men’s hockey team’s opening game of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023, they romped to a 7-2 victory over China at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai. The three singles came from Sukhjeet Singh (15′), Akashdeep Singh (16′) and Varun Kumar (19′, 30′) apart from Harmanpreet Singh’s two strikes, which came in the fifth and eighth minute while Mandeep Singh scored in the 40th minute.

Indian started well, with Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice from penalty corners. Sukhjeet Singh added the third one and Akashdeep Singh took it to 4-0. China took some sheen off the morning dew with Wenhui’s goal but then let Varun Kumar quickly restore the margin once again with two more before half time. Mandeep Singh completed his with one in the second half, giving India a deserving 7-2 victory.

China’s goals came through E Wenhui in 18′ and Jiesheng Gao in 25′.

#2. India 3-0 China (September 08, 2024) — Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024

India started their Asian Champions Trophy campaign by thrashing the host China 3-0 in Hulunbuir. India dominated the proceedings. Sukhjeet Singh opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a beautiful one-handed deflection from the pass by Jugraj Singh.

Uttam Singh added a second goal in the second quarter by capitalising on rebound after Md’s blocked shot. Raheel. It was Abhishek who sealed the deal for India in the final quarter with a reverse hit after a pass from Manpreet Singh.

China could not manage anything meaningful to really trouble India’s defense line; though they had a few chances from penalty corners, India did not score any more. India got their drag-flick attempts from Harmanpreet Singh and Jugraj Singh wrong, but the result would have never been in doubt after all.

India would have had no problem; the good performance and defensive solidity ensured a comfortable win at the hands of a relatively young Chinese side.

#1. India 1-0 China (September 17, 2024) — Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024

India ended their campaign with a hard fought win against China in the final of Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024. Jugraj Singh’s 51st-minute strike helped men in blue successfully defend their title. It was India’s record breaking fifth win in the event. Meanwhile hosts China had reached the final for the first time but could not prevail against the Paris Olympics bronze medallists.
