Hockey: India vs Netherlands last five meetings

India have won two of their last five matches against the Netherlands.

The Indian men’s hockey team have had an admirable outing at Paris Olympics 2024. It includes winning three of their Pool A matches and then producing a heroic effort against Great Britain in the quarter-final, defeating them while playing the majority of the game being a man down.

India are poised to face Germany in what is guaranteed to be a tough semi-final encounter. The German hockey team has won four Olympic gold medals and also the 2023 Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar. India has a tough challenge ahead in their last four fixture.

However, if they lose, Craig Fulton’s side will still have a chance to contest for a medal in the bronze medal clash. Should they face defeat in the semis, India will face Spain in the Bronze medal match after Spain went down to World No. #1 Netherlands in the other semi-final. Hence, let’s take a look at the last five meetings between the two sides.

5. Netherlands 3-2 India (10 June, 2023)

In their second game of the 2022–23 FIH Hockey Pro League season, India hoped for revenge against the Netherlands after having lost the previous game. But they received an early setback in the clash, with the Dutch side taking the lead in the seventh minute through forward Duco Telgenkamp.

Sanjay scored the equalizer 11 minutes later, but the Netherlands side took control of the game in the second half. They scored two rapid goals in the 40th and 43rd minutes, taking a 3-1 lead. Gurjant Singh pulled one back in the 46th minute, but India failed to score after that and suffered a narrow loss.

4. India 1-1 Netherlands (26 July, 2023)

The Netherlands hockey team won the 2022–23 FIH Pro League title and faced India soon after in the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation tournament. This friendly tournament saw India get a chance to weigh up their quality against the Dutch side and they put up a valiant effort in this clash.

India began the game pretty strongly and in the 12th minute, captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner impressively to give his side the lead. India played well in the first half and showcased brilliant defensive qualities too. However, in the 40th minute, Jasper Brinkman scored the equalizer for the Netherlands, and the two sides had to settle for a draw in the end.

3. Netherlands 1-2 India (30 July 2023)

India faced the Netherlands for a second time at the Spanish Hockey Federation tournament in the third-fourth-place playoff match. This time, the Indian side was not to be ousted or held to any draw. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side started the game by showing impressive resolve against the Dutch attack and took the lead in the 15th minute, being able to convert a penalty corner strongly.

But Dutch star Thierry Brinkman scored the equalizer 10 minutes later to bring things back level and an intense clash ensued after that. In the 50th minute, Dilpreet Singh turned up big for India by scoring from a penalty corner to help India regain their lead heading into the final stages. The Indian side was able to hold onto their lead to secure the bronze medal and get a big win over the Netherlands side.

2. India 2-2 (4-2) Netherlands (11 February 2024)

In the two sides’ first match at the 2023/24 FIH Hockey Pro League in Bhubaneswar, India, and the Netherlands played out a highly entertaining game. The Indian side started the game with confidence and midfielder Hardik Singh scored an impressive effort in the 13th minute to give his side the lead.

However, in the 30th minute, Dutch defender Jip Janssen scored the equalizer. Eight minutes after that, the Netherlands took the lead when their forward Koen Bijen produced an impressive goal. It appeared that India were destined to lose heading into the final bits of the game, but then captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a superb penalty corner in the 58th minute.

A penalty shootout was forced and Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh showcased his exceptional quality here, saving both Jorrit Croon and Jonas de Geus penalties and seeing his teammates convert all their efforts to get a big win.

1. India 1-1 (2-4) Netherlands (21 February 2024)

The Dutch side was hurting and determined for revenge when they faced India in the reverse fixture of the 2023/24 FIH Hockey Pro League clash in February earlier this year. They started the clash in an all-guns-blazing fashion, with Floris Middendorp giving them the lead in the 4th minute.

Despite strong pressure from the Netherlands, India bounced back in the third quarter, and Hardik Singh scored the equalizer in the 38th minute. After the end of regulation time, the scores were leveled at 1-1, and the match was forced into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Sukhjeet Singh and Shamsher Singh missed their penalty attempts as Dutch goalkeeper Maurits Visser made two saves. Meanwhile, Sreejesh only saved one penalty, with the Netherlands getting a 4-2 win in the shootout to claim the win.
