India has started its Paris Olympics 2024 campaign against New Zealand with a win.

The Indian men’s hockey team, boasting a rich Olympic legacy, has begun its campaign for a ninth gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The squad secured a victory against New Zealand in their opening match on Saturday, July 27.

With an unparalleled record of eight Olympic gold medals, India stands as the most successful team in the sport’s history. Their golden run spans from 1928 to 1980, with victories in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, and 1980.

The team is led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, who is participating in his third Olympics. There are also five Olympic debutants in the squad. This mix of experience and fresh talent will prove crucial in their pursuit of glory.

Their first opponent, New Zealand, have a sole Olympic gold in the sport from 1976 and are yet to claim a World Cup title. The head-to-head record between the two nations in World Cup matches stands at three wins each, with one draw.
