Hockey: India vs Pakistan last five meetings
The Men in Blue have had the upper hand against Pakistan in the recent past.
India have maintained their flawless record in the group stage of the hockey Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 at the Moqi Training Base in Hulunbuir, China, with a 2-1 victory over Pakistan. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who had reached the milestone of 200 career goals in the previous match, added two more to his tally in the win.
The result kept India firmly at the top of the points table, while Pakistan, suffering their first defeat of the tournament after two wins and two draws, still managed to secure a spot in the semifinals alongside India.
The intense clash between the two hockey arch-rivals took a dramatic turn when a heated exchange erupted between the players following a rough challenge by Pakistan’s Ashraf Waheed Rana on Jugraj Singh. Towards the end of the match when Pakistan were pressing hard for an equaliser, Jugraj was brought down after colliding with Rana inside the Indian circle.
Harmanpreet Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh swiftly confronted Rana, responding with sharp words before the on-field umpires, along with Pakistan captain Ammad Butt and other players, stepped in to defuse the tension and restore order.
India will now face South Korea in the semi-final clash against South Korea on September 16, 2024.
Despite Pakistan’s defeat, they still secured a spot in the semifinals alongside India. The victory, however, allowed India to continue their dominance over Pakistan, a streak that has lasted since 2016. In their last encounter at the Hangzhou Asian Games the previous year, India overwhelmed Pakistan with a 10-2 win. Just a few months prior to that, India had also triumphed 4-0 against Pakistan at the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 in Chennai.
Pakistan holds the edge in the overall head-to-head record against India, leading with 82 wins to India’s 67. However, recent history has seen India take control, winning 15 of the last 17 encounters, with the remaining two ending in draws. Pakistan’s most recent win over India dates back to the 2016 South Asian Games final in Guwahati.
Here’s a look at the last five meetings between the arch-rivals in hockey.
