Indian hockey‘s golden era produced numbers that look almost implausible today. Six consecutive Olympic golds. Entire tournaments without conceding a single goal. Winning margins the modern game would never allow.
Those records were not built on dominance alone. India played with a swagger that mesmerised onlookers at the time and still shapes how Indian hockey sees itself.
Several of those marks have stood for close to a century. A few of them are never going to be broken.

5. Biggest winning margin in a men’s hockey match at the Olympics
India travelled to Los Angeles in 1932 for the country’s second appearance in the field hockey event. They were defending champions, having won gold on debut four years earlier in Amsterdam.
Three teams took part — India, Japan and hosts USA. India thrashed Japan 11-1 in the opening fixture, but their best was still to come. They met the hosts in the last match to decide the winner of the event.
Certain American newspapers had suggested that to make it a contest, the Indians ought to play left-handed. They knew the home team faced an uphill task against a formidable Indian unit. It showed on the pitch.
India led 10-0 at half-time and won 24-1. Roop Singh scored 10, Dhyan Chand found the net eight times, Gurmit Singh scored five and Broome Pinniger got the other. William Boddington’s strike was a consolation for the USA.
4. Lowest number of goals conceded in a single Olympics
India were not only prolific in front of goal. They shut teams out completely, and did it more than once.
On their maiden appearance in 1928, India were the only non-European side in the event. The European nations knew very little about them, and found out quickly.
India beat Austria, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland 6-0, 9-0, 5-0 and 6-0 in the group stage. In the gold medal match they defeated hosts Netherlands 3-0, going through the entire tournament without conceding once.
Twenty-eight years later, India travelled to Melbourne. The group stage brought wins over Afghanistan, the USA and Singapore by 14-0, 16-0 and 6-0, followed by 1-0 victories against Germany in the semi-final and Pakistan in the gold medal match. India again finished a full Olympics without letting in a goal, a feat nobody has matched since.
3. Biggest winning margin in an Olympic men’s hockey gold medal match
India went to Berlin in 1936 as heavy favourites, and the record books kept falling.
They outclassed Japan, Hungary and the United States in the group stage before blowing away France in the semi-final. They reached the final without conceding, and met hosts Germany for gold.
India won 8-1. Dhyan Chand scored four, Ali Dara got a brace, and Carlyle Tapsell and Sayed Jaffar added one each. Kurt Weiss scored Germany’s only goal.
2. Most goals scored in a single Olympics in men’s hockey
The 1980 Olympics remain the last time India won hockey gold.
India began the Moscow tournament by beating Tanzania 18-0. That was followed by 2-2 draws against Poland and Spain. India then humbled Cuba 13-0 and closed the preliminary stage with a 4-2 win over hosts the Soviet Union.
In the gold medal match they edged Spain 4-3 at the Central Dynamo Stadium, finishing the tournament with 43 goals.

India have won eight Olympic golds, double the tally of second-placed Germany, along with one silver and four bronze medals.
The run began with six successive Olympic titles between 1928 and 1956, a record in itself, with the Games interrupted by the Second World War. Further golds followed in 1964 and 1980.
