The Men in Blue played their first match against Spain in which they emerged as the winner on home soil in Kalinga Stadium by 4-1. Meanwhile, they held World no.1 and defending champions Netherlands to a 2-2 draw before losing to Australia by 4-6 in a high-scoring affair.
After matches in Bhubaneswar, India will host more games at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela from February 19 to February 25, 2024.
What is the tournament’s format?
A total of nine teams face off against one another in a round-robin tournament between the October to June window in both home and away games. The team finishing at the top of the table after the conclusion of all games becomes the champion.
However, the team that finishes at the bottom of the Men’s FIH Pro League 2023-24 will face relegation and will be replaced by the winner of the Men’s FIH Nations Cup which will compete in the next edition of the tournament.
The team that will win the tournament will also earn a direct qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. The Netherlands and Belgium have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup as hosts of the competition.
