Hockey at Olympics: Full list of medal winners
Hockey was introduced at the Olympics in 1908.
Field hockey has been a part of the Olympic Games for over a century, making its debut at the 1908 London Olympics as a men’s sport. Throughout its Olympic journey, the sport has seen remarkable achievements and evolving dominance from various nations.
India stand out as the most successful team in Olympic field hockey history. With an impressive tally of 13 medals, including eight gold, one silver and four bronze, India’s dominance in the sport is unmatched. The country’s golden era spanned from 1928 to 1964, during which they won seven out of eight Olympic gold medals.
After India’s reign, Pakistan emerged as a dominant force, securing three gold and three silver medals between 1956 and 1984. However, both India and Pakistan saw their dominance fade after the 1980s and 1990s respectively. India’s last gold came in 1980, while Pakistan’s was in 1984.
Since 1968, the field has become more competitive, with teams from both hemispheres tasting success. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Zimbabwe have made their mark, while European nations such as the Netherlands and Germany have also shown strong performances.
Women’s field hockey was introduced to the Olympics in 1980, broadening the sport’s appeal. In 1976, the Montreal Olympics saw the first use of artificial turf for hockey, marking a significant technological shift in the sport.
