PR Sreejesh and Manu Bhaker will be the flag bearers for the Indian contingent during Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony.

In a fitting tribute to an illustrious career, PR Sreejesh, the legendary goalkeeper of the Indian men’s hockey team, has been named the co-flag bearer for India at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024, alongside shooting sensation Manu Bhaker. This honour follows India’s remarkable achievement of winning the bronze medal in men’s hockey for the second consecutive time.

The Indian men’s hockey team’s bronze medal victory is a testament to their resilience, mirroring their triumph at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This consecutive medal win reaffirms India’s place among the elite in international hockey.

PR Sreejesh, who has been the cornerstone of the Indian defense for four Olympic campaigns, played a pivotal role in this achievement. His leadership, experience, and remarkable goalkeeping skills were crucial in securing the medal.

Upon learning of his selection as India’s joint flag-bearer, PR Sreejesh expressed his profound honor and excitement. He stated, “Carrying the flag for India alongside Manu Bhaker at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics is an indescribable honor. The Olympics is the pinnacle of our sport, and I am truly humbled by this opportunity. I would also like to congratulate our shooting star, Manu Bhaker, on this achievement.”

Reflecting on his journey, he said, “As I step away from the team, I do so with immense pride in what we have accomplished. Representing my country has been the greatest privilege of my life, and I am fortunate to lead our contingent alongside Manu in this final moment.”

Expressing his pride on the development, Dr Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, said, “PR Sreejesh has been the backbone of Indian hockey, and his leadership on and off the field has inspired countless athletes. It is only fitting that he leads the nation as the flag-bearer at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony. His contributions to Indian hockey will be remembered for generations to come.”

Echoing these sentiments, Shri Bhola Nath Singh, Secretary General of Hockey India, said, “PR Sreejesh’s exploits for Indian hockey have been special, and now he has added a second consecutive Olympic bronze medal to his laurels. He represents our team and embodies the spirit of Indian sports. We are proud of his achievements and the legacy he leaves behind.”

Notably, PR Sreejesh was also the flag-bearer during the closing ceremony of the 19th Asian Games in 2022, where the Indian men’s hockey team clinched the gold medal.  The Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, 11th August 2024.
