The tournament averaged 3.77 goals per match in its recently concluded season.

FIH's Women's Hockey Pro League has just concluded its third edition. Argentina took home the trophy this time around. It was a tournament filled with upsets and thrills, especially with the replacement team India finishing third. Similar to the men's tournament, Australia and New Zealand withdrew from the women's tournament, opening doors for India and Spain.

After starting in October 2021, the FIH Pro League lasted almost nine months until June 2022. A total of 264 goals were scored by teams in 70 matches, and we are going to take a closer look at the top five Women's Top scorers for the 2021/22 season.

5. Stéphanie Vanden Borre (Belgium) - 7 Goals

In fifth place is Stéphanie Vanden Borre from Belgium. Borre finished the tournament with seven goals to her name. The Belgian team's fourth-place finish was due to her excellence throughout the tournament. The 24-year-old was a constant threat to opponents on penalty corners and scored six from the corners only.

Vanden Borre started the tournament slowly and went scoreless in her first two games. However, she quickly found her rhythm after matchday three. The two goals she scored against Germany gave Belgium a victory in their second match after losing to the Netherlands in the first game.

4. Frédérique Matla (Netherlands) - 7 Goals

The Dutch forward Matla scored seven goals in just eight games to lift the Netherlands to the second spot. Although she missed the first half of the tournament, she made up for it brilliantly in the second half. Matla scored the seven goals through three field goals, two penalty strokes, and two penalty corners.

Frédérique Matla had her first appearance against Spain and scored the lone goal that gave the Netherlands the victory. Against China, she scored a hat-trick to sign off the Netherlands' tournament with her best performance. With the Netherlands preparing to defend their world title from 1st July, Matla's good form is a warning to opponents.

3. Pia Maertens (Germany) - 7 Goals

Currently 23 years old, Pia Maertens plays forward for the German national team. On the top scorer's charts, she finished third, but, if you only count field goals, she wins by a wide margin. Maertens scored seven field goals and was running rampant for defenders.

She struggled for consistency throughout the season as she failed to score in eight of her 12 appearances. Germany's final match against China featured her best performance when she scored three goals to seal a 4-0 win.

2. Yibbi Jansen (Netherlands) - 9 Goals

Now it's Yibbi Jansen's turn from the runners-up in the Netherlands. With nine goals to her name, she played an integral role for the Dutch team throughout the campaign. Seven of those goals came from penalty corners. Throughout the tournament, Jansen did not disappoint home fans as she showcased her drag flicks.

Yibbi Jansen went scoreless in her first three games in the tournament, but she came back strongly as the tournament reached its crunch point. A memorable moment for her came in match number seven when she scored hat-tricks from thunderous penalty corners against the United States of America.

1. Agustina Gorzelany (Argentina) - 12 Goals

Argentina has been crowned FIH Pro League champions for the first time this season, and Agustina Gorzelany was the catalyst. It was her tracer bullet shots that terrified opponents at the tournament as she scored 12 goals. Gorzelany's ten goals came from penalty corners only and looked like she could score from anywhere.

She also scored two hat-tricks in the tournament and looked unstoppable when she was on song. In the World Cup, Argentina will be aiming for revenge after losing gold at the Tokyo Olympics last year. With Agustin General in red hot form, Argentina is certainly a big favourite.
