Women's Hockey India League: Final points table and top goalscorers

The Odisha Warriors clinched the maiden Women’s Hockey India League title.

It was just over two weeks away when we were all eagerly looking forward to the beginning of the Women’s Hockey India League 2025. A fortnight later, we are left with the fond memories of the tournament, which can cause a revolution in the sport, in the years to come.

Players and fans have celebrated a historic milestone in Indian hockey—the only league in the country, at a national level, which has seen the men’s and women’s competitions being played simultaneously.

All teams had their fair share of ups and downs, but two sides stood well and truly above the rest—the Soorma Hockey Club and the Odisha Warriors. The former ended up at the top of the table, but the latter held their nerves to clinch the final 2-1.

In a team consisting of international stars like Yibbi Jansen, Freeke Moes and Michelle Fillet, it was fittingly an Indian, Rutaja Pisal, who scored a brace to lead her side to victory. Penny Squibb converted a PC for Soorma after the Warriors opened the scoring. However, it wasn’t to be as Odisha scored a late winner to lift the maiden Women’s HIL.

It was a redemption of sorts for coach Janneke Schopman, considering that a year ago, the Indian Women’s team under her had lost to Japan (incidentally coached by Soorma Head Coach Jude Menezes) at the same ground- the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Hockey Stadium in Ranchi.

The Soorma Hockey Club were on top of their game throughout the league stage and will feel hard done, considering they put on a strong showing in the final too. They secured four outright wins, a loss in a shootout against the Warriors and an outright loss to the Delhi SG Pipers.

The Odisha Warriors weren’t at their best throughout the league stage but peaked at the right moment. They played out a total of three draws, clinching two bonus points. In the remaining three matches, which were decided in regulation time, the league champions won two matches and lost one, against Soorma.

The Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers showed glimpses of their potential but eventually fell short. They clinched outright victories in both their matches against the Pipers and held the Warriors in their first meeting, to a draw, before losing in the shootout. In the final league fixture, they needed to beat Soorma by five goals to qualify but ended up losing 2-4.

The Delhi SG Pipers, akin to their compatriots in the Men’s League had a disastrous campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table. Their only solace was that they secured one outright win, against Soorma. They also made the Warriors drop points, reigning supreme in the shootout in the second match between the two teams.

The top two teams at the end of the league stage- the Soorma Hockey Club and the Odisha Warriors played the final on 26th January.

Women’s Hockey India League top goalscorers

A total of 41 goals were scored in the tournament. Drag-flickers didn’t really enjoy their time initially. Eventually though, a total of 11 goals were scored via penalty corners, still a meagre number in comparison to the 27 field goals. A total of three penalty strokes were converted.

The Soorma Hockey Club scored a total of 15 goals, placing them at the top. Odisha Warriors follow them with 11 while the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers and the Delhi SG Pipers netted eight and four times respectively.

Two players scored five goals each, thus occupying the joint first place in the individual charts. There are two Indians present in the list of top five goal scorers, which can be improved in the upcoming editions, but is a heartening number, nevertheless.
