Indian Sports Calendar April 2024: Events to watch in final week

The Indian men’s badminton team will look to defend their Thomas Cup title.

After a decent last week in the Indian Sports Calendar, Indian athletes will look to maintain their run of form in the final week of April. Last week, Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D became the youngest person to win the candidates. Indian archers also kicked off their World Cup campaign with a fabulous show in Shanghai, which includes the Indian men’s recurve team beating heavyweights Korea to clinch the gold medal at the World Cup Stage 1.

Deepika Kumari also marked her return with a silver medal in women’s individual recurve event as India returned with a best-ever medal tally from the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai. India also won a Paris quota in sailing as Nethra Kumanan qualified for her second Olympics.

This week also has a lot of action, Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 will be in the spotlight followed by the Shooting ISSF World Cup and a couple of fencing tournaments. The IPL race to playoffs will be heated up as the tournament moves towards its business end.

Events to watch in final week of April in Indian Sports Calendar

Athletics

Indian Quartermilers will be in action this week eyeing Paris Olympics 2024 qualification at the World Relays event in Bahamas. Top 14 teams will qualify for the Olympics. Eyes will be on the 400m runners to qualify for all three disciplines. Meanwhile, the Indian Grand Prix 1 will also start this week and several Indian athletes will look to gain Olympic ranking points and to breach the qualification mark for Paris.

  • April 30: Indian Grand Prix 1
  • May 4-5: World Athletics Relays 2024, Bahamas

Badminton

The Badminton Team World Championships also known as the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 will continue this week. Fans will be excited to watch the shuttlers back in action. Indian men’s team who are the defending champions in the Thomas Cup will look to defend their title while the young Uber Cup team of India will look to impress everyone. Indian men’s team started their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Thailand while women’s team defeated Canada (4-1).

Boxing

The Asian Youth Boxing Championships will be continuing this week, and India’s boxers will look to get a handful of medals from the tournament.

  • April 25-8 May: Asian Youth Boxing Championships

Cricket

The IPL 2024 has entered its middle stage with teams now either racing away to ensure a place in playoffs or falling behind. The highest total in the IPL has already been rewritten thrice this season. The Indian women’s team will tour Bangladesh for five T20Is.

  • March 22-26 May: Indian Premier League (Ongoing)
  • April 28-9 May: India’s Tour of Bangladesh (Women)

Fencing

India will be sending an eight-member contingent to the World Cup (2 foil, 6 sabre). Having failed to qualify for Paris Olympics, Karan Singh and Bhavani devi will be in action.

  • May 2-3: Foil World Cup
  • May 4-6: Sabre World Cup

Football

The ISL knockouts are underway along with other domestic leagues.

  • September 21-May 4: Indian Super League (Ongoing)
  • January 20-April 27: 2nd Division I-League (Ongoing)
  • March 30-2 May: AIFF Sub-Junior League (Ongoing)
  • April 12-26: Reliance Foundation Development League (Ongoing)
  • April 12-22 May: U20 National Championships (Ongoing)

Golf

Shubhankar Sharma and Om Prakash Chouhan are the Indians who will be in action in the China Open.

  • May 2-5: Volvo China Open

Judo

India is sending a team of 12 judokas (5 Men and 7 women) across all disciplines.

  • May 3-5: Dushanbe Grand Slam, Tajikistan

Para Sports

Para shooting World Cup is scheduled this week. India has already won three gold and two silver so far.

  • April 22-1 May: Changwon WSPS World Cup 2024

Rugby

Indian rugby team will be in action and will face Sri Lanka in the semis. It’s a 4 team Knockout tournament.

  • April 30-4 May: Asia Rugby Championship: Men’s Division 1

Shooting

The ISSF Shooting World Cup will resume from May and the Indian shooters will look to perform consistently here.

  • May 1-12: ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun

Squash

Veer Chotrani will be the lone Indian who will be action in New York, and he is the fifth seed.

  • May 1-5: New York Hyder Trophy

Table Tennis

The Indian paddlers will be in action in Youth contender.

  • April 29-5 May: WTT Youth Contender Puerto Princesa 2024

Tennis

Rohan Bopanna will be action along with his partner Mathew Ebden. The pair will aim for consistency and will look to reach deep in the tournament.

  • April 22-5 May: ATP 1000 Madrid Open
