January month in the Indian Sports Calendar will start with big events.

The month of December 2024 was a notable one for Indian sports as it showed India made huge strides in the sport of Chess. Challenger Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest-ever World Chess champion at the age of 17 by defeating China’s Ding Liren. The year ended on another high note with Koneru Humpy clinching the Women’s World Rapid Chess title in New York.

As the 2025 year begins, the sporting competitions are back in full swing with many top tournaments like Malaysia Open and India Open in Badminton, Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Chess, Kho Kho World Cup and International Series in Golf among the top ones to look out for. With this, let’s take a look at the Indian sports calendar for January.

Major events to follow in January in Indian Sports Calendar

Aquatics

The National Games’ Swimming, Diving, and Water Polo events will be held at the Aquatic Center, Golapur in Haldwani.

Archery

January will feature many sub-junior events, selection trials for World Ranking, World Cups, and World Championships, along with Archery events at the National Games…

  • January 8-9: Selection Trials for Para Archery Team – Asia Para Cup/ Fazza Para Archery World Ranking Tournament
  • January 8-12: Para Classification & 6th Para Archery National Championship
  • January 10-13: Selection Trials for World Cups/World Championships 
  • January 14-17: Selection Trials for Junior Archery Team – Asia Cup WRT Stage – 1
  • January 31-7 February: Archery at 38th National Games

Athletics

National Cross-Country Championships and Mumbai Marathon are some of the important events taking place in January.

Badminton

In January, four BWF World Tour events – the Malaysia Open, India Open, Indonesia Masters, and Thailand Masters will feature both experienced and emerging stars. Additionally, many domestic tournaments are also scheduled to take place.

Basketball

The men’s and women’s senior National Basketball Championship is one of the competitions to watch out for in January apart from the sport taking place at the National Games.

  • January 5-12: Senior National Basketball Championship (both men and women)

Boxing

Besides the sport commencing in the National Games, the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship is slated for January 6 to 13 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Canoeing

Canoeing events will be held at the Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand for the National Games.

Chess

The renowned Tata Steel Chess Tournament will be staged in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, from January 17 and running until February 2.

Cricket

The final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series was played from 3 to 7 January at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia won this match and won the series 3-1. 

The ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup is another prestigious tournament to look out for in January, besides other international and domestic tournaments like the England Tour of India, the Ireland Women’s Tour of India, and the Ranji Trophy.

Many World Cup and Grand Prix tournaments (senior and junior) are slated for January in Fencing.

  • January 10: Grand Prix Tunis Sabre (Women)
  • January 18: Junior World Cup Boston (Men)
  • January 18: Junior Epee World Cup Bahrain- Individual (Men)
  • January 19: Junior Epee World Cup Bahrain- Team (Men)

Field Hockey

The revamped Hockey India League will be running through January, concluding on February 1. Additionally, field hockey will be featured as one of the sports in the National Games.

Football

ISL, Indian Women’s League, I-League and I-League 2 are the major football competitions to watch out for in January.

  • January 28-14 February: Football at 38th National Games

Golf

The International Series tournament is set to debut in India this January. Scheduled to run from January 30 to February 2 at the DLF Country Club in Gurugram, the event will feature prominent names like Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Joaquin Niemann, and crowd favorite Anirban Lahiri.

Gymnastics

The gymnastics events at the National Games will be conducted at the New Multipurpose Hall at a Sports College in Dehradun.

Besides Handball and Beach Handball at the National Games, the Senior Women’s National Handball Championship is an important tournament commencing in January.

Judo

The Old MPH will host Judo events during the National Games 2025.

Kho Kho

Kho Kho World Cup is the biggest competition scheduled in January hosted by India at the IGI stadium in New Delhi, featuring  21 men’s and 20 women’s teams.

Lawn Bowls

In Dehradun, the Lawn Bowls events are scheduled to be held at the Hockey Practice Ground.

Many talented shooters are set to participate at the National Games, taking place at the Shooting Range – Sports College & Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.

Besides Squash at the National Games, the British Junior Open and Czech Junior Open will witness Indian athletes’ participation in the month.
