Indian Sports Calendar May 2024: Events to watch in second week

A jam-packed schedule awaits Indian sports fans over the next week in the Indian Sports Calendar, with several marquee events lined up across athletics, wrestling, and cricket. Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra will kick off his 2024 season at the Doha Diamond League on May 10, aiming to breach the elusive 90m mark in the javelin throw.

On the wrestling mat, Indian grapplers have a final shot to book their tickets to the Paris Olympics at the World Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul from May 9.

Meanwhile, IPL 2024 is headed for a thrilling climax as teams fight for playoff spots. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have potentially sealed their playoff berths, leaving the likes of Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad to battle it out for the remaining spots.

Major events to watch in May second week in Indian Sports Calendar

Athletics

The Indian Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra will start his season in the Diamond League. Apart from that Indian athletes will look to do well at the Federation Cup and will try to achieve the cut for the Olympics and to improve their road to Paris rankings.

  • May 11-12: Track Fest, Los Angeles
  • May 12: Hylo Javelin Meeting
  • May 12-15: Federation Cup

Boxing

The Asian Youth Boxing Championships will continue this week, and India’s boxers will look to get a handful of medals from the tournament.

  • April 25-8 May: Asian Youth Boxing Championships (Ongoing)

After winning the candidates, Gukesh Dommaraju will be in action along with Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi at the Poland Rapid Blitz.

Cricket

The IPL 2024 has entered its middle stage with teams now either racing away to ensure a place in playoffs or falling behind. The highest total in the IPL has already been rewritten thrice this season. The Indian women’s team are currently touring Bangladesh for five T20Is. India have won the series 3-0 and would look to whitewash the opponent.

Equestrian

Indian riders will be up in action in Germany.

  • 10-11 May: CDN Germany

Football

The Indian football landscape in the second week of May will feature domestic tournaments including the AIFF U-17 Youth League playoffs, and the Swami Vivekananda U-20 Men’s National Football Championship.

  • May 01-15: Senior Women’s National Football Championship (Final Round) (Ongoing)
  • May 08-12: AIFF U17 Youth League Play-offs
  • April 12-22 May: Swami Vivekananda U20 Men’s National Football Championship (Ongoing)

Judo

India is sending 11 (4 Male, 7 Female) Judokas for the international tournament.

  • 10-11 May: Qazaqstan Barysy Grand slam

Para Sports

A couple of Para sports are in action this week.

  • 10-12 May: ICF Para Canoe World Championship (Olympic Qualifier), Hungary
  • 8-11 May: Para Powerlifting Pattaya World Cup, Thailand

Shooting

The ISSF Shooting World Cup will resume from May and the Indian shooters will look to perform consistently here. The Olympics Selection trials 3 & 4 are also happening. This is the last chance for Indian Rifle and Pistol athletes to book their spots at Paris.

Squash

Ramit Tandon will be the lone Indian who is participating in the World Championships. A couple of Indian players will be action in the home tournament.

  • 9-18 May: PSA World Championship
  • 8-12 May: The Poona Club LTD Open Squash tournament

Table Tennis

The Indian paddlers will be in action in Youth Contender.

  • May 1-11: WTT Saudi Smash
  • May 8-11: WTT Youth Contender Gangneung 2024

Tennis

While Sumit Nagal has withdrawn from the upcoming ATP 1000 tournament, India’s Rohan Bopanna is set to be in action at Rome. Bopanna and his doubles partner Matthew Ebden were knocked out in the opening round of Madrid Open last week and will hope to put out a better performance at the Rome Masters.

  • May 6-19: ATP 1000 Rome Masters

Wrestling

The Indian grapplers will line up for a final chance to qualify for the Olympics. India have, so far, won only four quotas and will hope to add more in this qualification tournament.

  • May 9-12: World Olympic Qualification Tournament
