Indian Sports Calendar September 2024: Major events to look forward to in third week

India will look to defend their title in Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024.

This week in the Indian sports calendar, all eyes will be on the Chess Olympiad, where both the Indian men’s and women’s teams are aiming for a podium finish. In addition, India will look to defend its title in hockey at the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 in China. Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh is set to compete in an able-bodied competition alongside top names like Brady Ellison.

India will also host the International Fencing Tournament in New Delhi. Moreover, the prestigious China Open Super 1000 tournament will take place this week, followed by multiple tennis tournaments. Bangladesh will also tour India for two test matches and three T20s.

Major events to follow in third week of September in Indian sports calendar

Archery

India is sending a four-member contingent for the World Archery Field Championships. Rishabh Yadav, Abhishek Verma, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Paralympic Champion Harvinder Singh will represent India.

  • September 15-24: 2nd NTPC National Ranking Archery Tournament 2024
  • September 16-22: Lac La Biche 2024 World Archery Field Championships

Badminton

The Prestigious China Open, which is a BWF Super 1000 tournament will kick off this week. However, many top Indian players who competed at Paris Olympics 2024 have withdrawn from the tournament.

  • September 17-22: China Open

Chess

The Chess Olympiad has already kicked off and the Indian teams are eyeing a podium finish. The men’s team have a lot of expectations in this tournament and with Hikaru Nakamura not playing, there is a good opportunity for India to win the tournament.

  • September 10-23: 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad (Ongoing)

Cricket

Bangladesh will tour India for two test and three T20 matches. The first test will be held in Chennai.

  • September 19-12 October: Men’s Bangladesh tour of India (2 Test and 3 T20s)

Football

The Indian football league has also started, and fans will hope for a cracker season with a hope of some new talents coming up this season.

Fencing

India will host a fencing international tournament probably for the first time.

  • September 15: FIE Satellite Tournament — Women’s Foil (New Delhi)
  • September 21-22: FIE Satellite Tournament — Men’s & Women’s Foil (Bucharest, Romania)
  • September 21-22: FIE Satellite Tournament — Men’s & Women’s Sabre (Reykjavik, Iceland)
  • September 22: FIE Satellite Tournament — Men’s & Women’s Epee (Belgrade, Serbia)

Golf

  • September 19-22: BMW PGA Championship (Wentworth Club, London)
  • September 19-22: Kroger Queen City Championships (Maineville, Ohio, USA)

Hockey

After topping the group stage undefeated, the Indian men’s hockey team will look to defend their title. They will face South Korea, who they defeated 3-1 in the pool stage, in the semifinals and would want to repeat the same result.

Tennis

Yuki Bhambri and his partner Albano Olivetti will be in action at the Chengdu Open, while India’s number #1 in singles, Sumit Nagal, will be participating in the Hangzhou Open.
