Indian Sports Calendar September 2024: Major events to look forward to this month

Some of the exciting events are lined up this month.

Indian athletes will continue to remain in focus in the upcoming Indian Sports Calendar, with the Paris Paralympics scheduled to conclude on September 8. India achieved its best-ever campaign and medal tally at the Paris Paralympics 2024, with the nation winning more than 25 medals, including first-ever medal in Judo and first-ever gold in Archery.

Along with the Paris Paralympics, Indian sportspersons will feature in other different tournaments in sports like Athletics, Badminton, Shooting, Table Tennis, and so on. Let’s look at the top sporting events to watch out for in September where Indian athletes will be in contention.

Major events to follow in September in Indian sports calendar

Archery

Indian archers will be in action in both compound and recurve categories at the Summer Paralympics 2024. Some of the top names include Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar, Harvinder Singh, and Pooja Jatyan, among others.

Athletics

At the Zurich and Brussels Diamond League final, Neeraj Chopra is expected to feature at the Diamond League meetings to achieve his second title in the circuit. 

Meanwhile, our Indian Paralympians will compete at the Summer Paralympics to bring glory to the nation. Notable athletes who will feature at the Paris Paralympics are Sumit Antil, Mariyappan Thangavelu, Nishad Kumar, Preethi Pal, Simran Sharma, and Yogesh Kathuniya among others.

  • September 13-14: Brussels Diamond League Final
  • August 30-8 September: Athletics at Paris Paralympics

Badminton

Badminton, which marked its debut at the Tokyo Paralympics, saw India clinch the fourth position in the medal table with 4 medals overall, including 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. The Indian para-shuttlers will target another successful campaign in Paris as Suhas Yathiraj, Nitesh Kumar, and Krishna Nagar are some big names to watch out for.

Many Indian shuttlers will mark their participation in multiple Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour events including Taipei Open, Vietnam Open, Hong Kong Open, China Open, and Macau Open in September.

Canoeing

In Paracanoeing, India will witness three representations in the form of Yash Kumar, Pooja Ojha, and Prachi Yadav at the Paris Paralympics.

Cricket

In September, Bangladesh will be touring India for two test matches – (i) September 19-23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and (ii) September 27-1 October at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

  • September 19-1 October: Bangladesh Tour of India (2 Test matches)

Cycling

Indian para-cyclists Arshad Shaik and Jyoti Gaderiya will compete in Cycling (road) events at the Summer Paralympics 2024.

  • September 4-7: Cycling (Road) at Paris Paralympics

Football

The Indian football team will face challenges as they compete against Syria and Mauritius as the three nations participate in the Intercontinental Cup. It will be interesting to see how the Indian team performs under new head coach Manolo Marquez.

Fencing

India is all set to host the FIE Satellite Tournament – Women’s Foil in New Delhi at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on September 15. Foil fencers from India are anticipated to feature in the competition.

Judo

Indian judokas Kapil Parmar and Kokila Kaushiklate will be in action at the Paris Paralympics between Sept 5 and 7 in the men’s J1 -60 kg and J2 -48 kg respectively.

Hockey

After defending their bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, the Indian hockey team will have the task to defend their Asian Champions Trophy which is slated from Sept 8 to 17, 2024. Team India will be without their ace goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who has now retired from the sport, and Hardik Singh, their vice-captain who has been given rest for the tournament. Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Shamsher Singh, and Gurjant Singh are other notable absentees.

Powerlifting

In Powerlifting, four Indian athletes will be representing India including Paramjeet Kumar, Ashok, Kasthuri Rajamani, and Sakina Khatun from Sept 4 to Sept 8 at the Paris Paralympics.

Shooting

With Singhraj Adhana’s absence due to a change in International Paralympic Committee (IPC) rules, Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal, Rubina Francis, and Rudransh Khandelwal are a few top para-shooters who will headline the Indian shooting contingent at Paris Paralympics.

Later in the last week of September, Indian junior shooters will be keen to showcase their talent to the world at the ISSF Junior World Championship Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun after the senior shooters bagged three bronze medals at the Paris Olympics.

Squash

Indian athletes will compete in multiple Squash tournaments in September, with the FISU World University Squash Championships and Asian Masters Championships being some of the premier competitions.

Swimming

Suyash Jadhav is the lone Indian swimmer who will be in action at the Paris Paralympics in the 50m butterfly S7 event.

Table Tennis 

Para table tennis athlete Bhavina Patel is the biggest name to look out for at the Paris Paralympics 2024 in the month of September. Additionally, Indian paddlers will also feature in multiple WTT Contender and Youth Contender events in the month.

Tennis

Team India will be without its best men’s singles player in the Davis Cup tie against Sweden as Sumit Nagal has withdrawn due to a back injury. The 16-year-old Manas Dhamne has been announced as the replacement for Nagal for the event.

However, some notable athletes who are likely to feature in different tournaments in September are Ramkumar Ramanathan, Yuki Bhambri, and Sriram Balaji among other names.
