ISL 2026-27: Things we learned from Kerala Blasters' season opener

The Blasters won their first game of ISL 2026-27 against Inter Kashi.

There are wins that bring relief, wins that build confidence, and wins that reveal the potential of a team. Kerala Blasters’ 0–2 victory over Inter Kashi in their opening match of the 2026–27 Indian Super League season might have offered a little of all three.

Under head coach Ashley Westwood, the Blasters began their campaign with exactly where they needed: three points.

Vibin Mohanan opened the scoring in the 18th minute, while Andre Green’s stoppage-time finish ensured that the result reflected a successful start to a new chapter.

In this article, we take a look at the things we have learned from Kerala Blasters’ ISL 2026-27 opener.

A promising start, not a finished product

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

For a club that has entered a new era, winning the opening match matters. It gives the players confidence, offers the coaching staff breathing room, and gives supporters an early reason to believe. However, one victory cannot answer every question surrounding Kerala Blasters.

The performance showed encouraging attacking combinations, particularly through the right flank, where Korou Singh and Vibin Mohanan combined effectively for the opening goal. Vibin’s finish was important, but the movement and passing that created the opportunity were equally encouraging.

It was the kind of goal that suggested the team could create chances through coordinated attacking play rather than relying entirely on individual brilliance.

Still, the Blasters did not control every phase of the game. Inter Kashi found opportunities of their own, especially when spaces opened up in the second half. There were moments when Kerala had to defend under pressure, and the opposition came close to making the contest more complicated.

That is where the coaching staff will have plenty to analyse.

Vibin, Korou and Freddy: The importance of the midfield core

Kerala Blasters registered a 0-2 win over Inter Kashi.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Kerala Blasters’ victory over Inter Kashi was the contribution of Vibin Mohanan, Korou Singh and Freddy Lallawmawma.

Vibin’s opening goal was important, but his role as captain adds another dimension to his responsibilities. Beyond his midfield contribution, he must provide leadership, maintain composure under pressure and help keep the team organised during difficult periods.

Korou, meanwhile, offers pace, attacking movement and the ability to stretch opposition defences, as demonstrated by his involvement in the build-up to Vibin’s goal.

His challenge will be to turn that attacking potential into consistent goals and assists.

Freddy’s importance lies in the energy, work rate and balance he can bring to the midfield, particularly when the team loses possession and needs to reorganise defensively.

Together, the three can offer Westwood a valuable combination of leadership, attacking penetration and midfield stability.

However, their real impact will depend on how consistently they perform against stronger opposition and how effectively their qualities complement one another. For Vibin, this season is also an opportunity to establish himself not just as a talented midfielder, but as a captain capable of leading Kerala Blasters through the challenges ahead.

Andre Green and the value of patience

Andre Green scored Kerala Blasters’ second goal against Inter Kashi.

Andre Green’s late goal was more than a finishing touch to the result. It demonstrated the value of having players capable of making a difference in the closing stages.

Kerala had opportunities to extend their lead earlier, but the second goal arrived only in stoppage time, with Mohammed Sanan providing the assist.

The combination offered a glimpse of the attacking options available to Westwood. Green’s composure in the final third and Sanan’s contribution will encourage supporters, particularly if they can develop into consistent sources of goals and chances.

However, the Blasters cannot afford to depend on late goals to settle matches. Against stronger opponents, missed opportunities could become costly. The challenge is to turn promising attacking moments into a more consistent pattern of performance.

Areas of concern

The Blasters faced Inter Kashi in their ISL 2026-27 opener.

Allowing Inter Kashi back into the game

Kerala scored in the 18th minute but failed to establish a decisive advantage for most of the match. Inter Kashi found opportunities, particularly in the second half, and forced the Blasters to defend their narrow lead.

Why it matters: Against a stronger opponent, allowing the game to remain 1–0 could turn one defensive mistake into dropped points.

Defensive transitions and spaces behind the midfield

When Kerala lost possession, Inter Kashi managed to push forward and create pressure. The team needs to improve how quickly its midfield and defence reorganise after losing the ball.

Improvement: The nearest players should press immediately, while the remaining midfielders protect central spaces and the defenders maintain their shape.

Not converting attacking opportunities early enough

Kerala created chances but did not score their second goal until stoppage time. Andre Green’s late finish settled the contest, but the team had spent much of the match without a comfortable cushion.

Improvement: Better decision-making in the final third, more accurate finishing and quicker combinations around the penalty area.

Managing pressure when opponents increase the tempo

Inter Kashi became more threatening in the second half, pressing the Blasters and forcing errors. Kerala need to be comfortable playing out under pressure rather than repeatedly surrendering possession.

Improvement: Offer short passing options to the player on the ball, use switches of play to escape pressure and recognise when a longer pass is the safer option.

A new era needs more than a good opening result

For Kerala Blasters, this season carries significance beyond the usual race for points. With a new chapter beginning at the club, supporters will naturally expect progress, ambition and a clearer sense of direction.

The 0–2 win over Inter Kashi is a positive first step. It shows that the team can produce decisive moments, defend its advantage and finish a match strongly.

But the objective should be bigger than celebrating an opening-day victory. The Blasters need to build an identity that supporters can recognise: a team that competes consistently, creates chances with purpose, defends collectively and knows how to manage difficult moments.

One match does not establish that identity. A series of performances might. The result is worth celebrating. The performance is worth analysing. And the real test begins with whether Kerala Blasters can build on both.

Three points secured. A promising beginning. But the season will be judged by what comes next.
