After the 20th edition of the Asian Games, which concluded in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture with India winning gold in the Kabaddi event after showcasing an unbeaten run in their Asian campaign, the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) has come up with the inaugural edition of a tournament that can potentially open the doors that have remained shut for decades for the mat sport.
For a sport that grew out of South Asian villages and courtyards, it was unable to achieve the status of a medal sport at the Commonwealth Games. Following that, Kabaddi didn’t become a part of the Glasgow 2026 edition.
The inaugural edition of the Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship 2026 will serve as a test case to nominate Kabaddi as a prime event at the Commonwealth Games 2030.
India has been tasked with hosting the Commonwealth Games’ centennial edition in 2030, the Amdavad 2030. The Indian Olympic Association has made a request to include kabaddi as a main event on the schedule, and this debut display of the mat sport in late October will serve as an appeal letter on the same turf as a test run.

The tournament is scheduled to be held from 21st to 31st October, 2026. Before the final dates were announced by AKFI, the schedule for the inaugural edition had to undergo significant changes, with the initial dates being 10th to 20th October, 2026. The event had to be shifted to the latter half of the month due to significant constraints.

The tournament is scheduled to be hosted at the Veer Savarkar Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The same venue will be hosting the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games four years later, and it is intriguing to see how the venue is able to match the tempo of the tension that gets created while hosting an event of this repute.
