Exclusive: PKL likely to undergo big changes with possible alterations in format, duration

In season 11, PKL was concluded in a three-city format.
The Pro Kabaddi League is the most exciting event of the year for Kabaddi fans. Many top players showcase their brilliant skills in this league. Since the inception of PKL in 2014, Kabaddi has made huge progress across the country and is one of the best leagues in India.
Before the start of PKL 12, some big changes are expected in this league. In what could be a big change from recent editions, the PKL is likely to return to a shorter, single-city format for its upcoming 12th season (PKL 12).
As discussions continue behind closed doors, sources close to the development have revealed exclusively to Khel Now that both the organisers and the broadcasters are leaning towards a tighter calendar, similar to PKL’s early years.
One of the biggest talking points is the possibility of scrapping the caravan-style format. PKL 12 might be held in just one city for six weeks. Instead of travelling across multiple cities, PKL 12 could take place in just one city, over a condensed window of around six weeks.
The shorter format is being viewed as a necessary reset and is being explored for two key reasons. The first one is cutting operational costs, and the second is addressing the dip in fan engagement over the longer league structure. The idea is to bring back the urgency and energy of the early editions while reducing the logistical burden on franchises.
While the caravan model allowed fans across India to witness the action live, the longer season—spanning up to 13 weeks—has not been able to sustain consistent engagement. A compact version, officials believe, will reignite the excitement and intensity that defined the league’s earlier years.
When will PKL 12 start?
Fans won’t have to wait long to witness the return of kabaddi action. The 12th edition of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL 12) is likely to start in mid-August 2025, with possible dates being August 15, 16, or 17.
Following a high-profile auction earlier this month, anticipation has been building rapidly, especially after Haryana Steelers lifted their maiden title in Season 11.
With the shift in format, fans can expect more back-to-back games, quicker results, and less travel for teams, which could translate to sharper performances on the mat. While no official statement has been made yet, conversations between league organisers, team owners, and broadcasters are going in this direction.
