OPINION: Should PKL be held twice a year?

PKL 12 is set to kick off on August 29.
As the excitement builds for Pro Kabaddi League Season 12 (PKL 12), discussions of major changes are already underway. After Season 11 was held in three cities, the organisers are now looking to hold PKL 12 in three to four cities as well.
According to Khel Now sources, they are also trying to shorten the duration of the league. If this plan goes ahead, it could open the door to something even more exciting: hosting PKL twice a year. Let’s not forget, this wouldn’t be the first time PKL is played twice in a year.

In 2016, fans enjoyed both Season 3 and Season 4 in the same calendar year, first from January 30 to March 5 and then again from June 25 to July 31. That format kept the excitement alive and gave Kabaddi enthusiasts plenty to look forward to.
But should PKL be held twice a year? Without a doubt, the answer is yes! A biannual PKL can address several challenges faced by players, fans, and even the organisers.
Shorter seasons will benefit everyone

The current PKL format lasts for about three months, which can be exhausting for both players and spectators.
By introducing two seasons a year, each lasting around six weeks, PKL can stay fresh and exciting. Fans won’t have to wait an entire year for the next season, ensuring that the buzz around kabaddi remains constant.
Additionally, shorter formats mean less travel, especially with the single-city approach expected in PKL 12. Players face less fatigue, can avoid burnout, and enjoy more time with family during the off-season.

Players can earn more & stay fitter
A biannual PKL means two auctions in a year. For players, this translates to double the earning opportunities—an important factor since many don’t have stable jobs.
Also, the reduced workload in a shorter season lessens the risk of injuries, allowing players to stay in peak condition for longer. A six-week intense season followed by recovery ensures better longevity for athletes.
More squad rotation, more opportunities

Having two PKL seasons every year also opens doors for increased squad rotation. Teams will likely rest key players across different seasons, giving younger or less experienced players more chances to shine.
This is particularly valuable because Kabaddi lacks an extensive domestic calendar, unlike cricket. For many players, PKL remains the only significant platform to showcase their skills. A biannual format ensures more match opportunities, especially for bench players eager to break into the starting lineup.
Cost efficiency & improved fan engagement
Organisers also stand to gain by cutting operational costs with shorter, single-city formats. Moreover, a tighter calendar keeps the excitement alive among fans. With two seasons in a year, there’s no prolonged wait, and fans get to enjoy high-intensity kabaddi action at regular intervals.
In conclusion, holding PKL twice a year makes perfect sense. It benefits players financially, keeps them healthier, encourages broader squad usage, and keeps fans consistently engaged. While the reduced number of matches per season is a factor, the overall opportunities across two editions more than compensate for it.
