Sagar Rathee was injured in the first match of Tamil Thalaivas in PKL 11.

Tamil Thalaivas’ campaign suffered an early setback as their skipper Sagar Rathee has been ruled out of Pro Kabaddi League 2024 (PKL 11) following an injury he suffered in the team’s season opener against the Telugu Titans.

The right-corner defender who has kept an excellent 53% tackle success rate all through his career could garner only three tackle points before being substituted in the 32nd minute of the PKL 11 season opener. The young 25-year-old had amassed 226 tackle points from 71 matches, besides 24 super tackles and 20 High 5s last season.

“I wanted to stay with the team and make it through this season. However, my injury does not heal very fast. So, I have no choice but to let them play without me. I will be happy from afar, supporting them in every match, cheering for the Thalaivas from the sidelines”, said Sagar Rathee in a video message shared on Tamil Thalaivas’s Instagram account.

Tamil Thalaivas season so far in PKL 11

Defender Sahil Gulia, who was handed over the captaincy of Tamil Thalaivas in Sagar’s absence, under his leadership team is currently eighth in the league standings. Thalaivas have won three of their first eight matches while facing four losses and one draw.

The Thalaivas defence has maintained a 48% success rate this season while having executed 94 successful tackles out of 197 attempts. Besides, the team has earned 10 super tackles and given 10 all-outs to their opponents.

Rathee’s injury added to a long line of failures for the Chennai-based franchise, which joined the league way back in season 5 when they cherished hopes of crossing beyond the playoffs. His absence might have had a strong impact on his team’s defence as he averaged 2.84 successful tackles per match.

Before this season-ending injury, Rathee had already established himself as one of PKL’s most reliable defenders with 379 successful tackles in his career. His defensive expertise earned him the captaincy role though he has also contributed marginally to the team’s offense with two raid points in his career.
